Sindhu loses epic semifinal at All England Championship

Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu let history slip out of her hands as she lost an epic semifinal against world no 2 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi to bow out of the USD 1000,000 All England championship here today. On the cusp of history, Sindhu failed to build on a handsome lead in the decider to go down 21-19 19-21 18-21 to Yamaguchi after battling for an hour and 19 minutes. This was the ninth victory on the trot for the 20-year-old Japanese, who had won the German Open early this month. In scenes similar to the one that went down to the wire in the summit clash of last year's Dubai Super Series Final, both Sindhu and Yamaguchi threw themselves on the court, traversing diagonally again and again during a series of punishing rallies, which defined the edge-of-the-seat thriller. However, in the end it was Yamaguchi, who showed better nerves to walk away with the match and cement a place at the finals against World No 1 Taiwanese Tai Tzu Ying at the Arena Birmingham here. Despite being ..

Raphael Augusto, also a Brazilian, added to the home team's agony with his 67th minute strike, leaving the raucous home fans stunned at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, which was packed to the rafters. Gurbani puts Vidarbha on brink of win after record 800/7

Vidarbha ended up with a record 800 for seven before pacer Rajneesh Gurbani tore through the Rest of India batting to put the reigning Ranji champions on the cusp of securing the Irani Cup here. Vidarbha, who began day four at 702 for five, declared at 800 for seven after Apoorv Wankhade (157 not out off 221) scored his second first-class hundred. Vidarbha's mammoth score is the highest total in Irani Cup's history. Gurbani (4/46), who is only the second bowler to take a hat-trick in a Ranji Trophy final, then had RoI reeling at six for 98 in 28 overs before they recovered to 236 for six at close of play. Hanuma Vihari (81 batting) and Jayant Yadav (62 batting) saved the blushes for RoI with an unbeaten 138-run stand for the seventh wicket. It is unlikely that Vidarbha would be able to bowl out RoI twice on day five but a very likely first-innings lead will be enough to lift the trophy. Gurbani had Ravikumar Samarth (0) caught before he removed RoI captain Karun Nair (21). Umesh ...

Bengal coach not happy with Santosh Trophy preparation

They may be record 32 times winners in the national football championship for the Santosh Trophy, but Bengal will not start overwhelming favourites with their "worst preparation ever". Bengal today announced a 20-member team and head coach Ranjan Chowdhury painted a grim picture, saying the team has never been so short of preparation in its 72nd year history of the tournament. "I don't recall a time when Bengal was so short of preparation. I think I'm facing this situation for the first time ever. We are almost without preparation," Chowdhury told PTI. His biggest concern was that he did not get to train with five of his key players including forward Jiten Murmu, who is also the captain. "They were busy with their club commitments at Mohammedan Sporting and will be joining tomorrow -- on the eve of our opener (against Manipur)," he said. "We had virtually no training before the tournament. It's been a tough preparation." The Bengal gaffer will also miss four players who have returned .
