India's Aizawl FC suffered a 1-3 drubbing at the hands of New Radiant in their maiden group stage AFC Cup match, with inspirational skipper Ali Ashfaq's hat-trick leading the Maldivian charge here today. The 2016-17 I-League winners, playing with 10 men for some part of the second half, found the day's opener in the 33rd minute, but the game belonged to New Radiant as star striker Ashfaq scored in the 40th, 77th and 85th minute at the National Stadium. The three points secured from the game lifted New Radiant, champions of Maldives, to the top Group E with two wins from as many games. Coming after an unimpressive I-League campaign where they managed to stave off relegation, Aizawl drew first blood in the game when Lalram Hmunmawia, with his left foot, sent the ball to the left corner of the empty net for the Indian club's first goal in the continental competition. Domestic doyen Wasim Jaffer showed his mastery with a 53rd first-class hundred in Vidarbha's 289 for two against Rest of India on the opening day of the Irani Cup, which witnessed an out-of-sorts Ravichandran Ashwin trying his hand at bowling leg breaks. The Ranji Trophy champions were hardly bothered by the Rest of India bowlers on a placid Jamtha track as the 40-year-old Jaffer remained unbeaten on 113 off 166 balls with 16 boundaries and a six to his credit. He was as regal in his strokeplay as he has always been, becoming the highest ever run-getter in the history of Irani Cup. Jaffer, who was appearing in his 242nd first-class matches, has now played 12 Irani Cup games (mostly for Mumbai, a few for Rest of India and now for Vidarbha) with over 1000 runs -- the tally is more than the top-5 that includes legends such as GR Vishwanath, Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Gavaskar. Ashwin's figures of 25-1-66-1 won't tell the story about him being largely ineffective primarily due to lack of .

The parties have been directed to file their replies within two weeks and the matter has been posted for next hearing on April 28. India's numero uno goalkeeer Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is eyeing a maiden success in top-flight football, as his team Bengaluru FC gears up to take on Chennaiyin FC in the final of Indian Super League. "I haven't won it yet so I don't know about the feeling. If we win, it will be a great feeling to have achieved something that I have not before. We take one game at a time and that is what the aim is right now," he said. Gurpreet has never won a league title and the closest he came was with East Bengal when they finished runners-up twice in the I-League. Gurpreet's presence in the side has only strengthened Bengaluru's defence as could be reflected in the home side conceding a mere 17 goals in 20 games. Gurpreet has seven clean sheets out of the 18 matches he has played in ISL, with the standout performance coming in Bhubaneswar where he single-handedly kept Jamshedpur FC's attacks at bay. He will look for more of the same against Chennaiyin in the final on Saturday. Gurpreet has never ...
