ICC approves Cricket Canada's T20 league
The ICC has given green light to Cricket Canada's ambitious maiden venture Global T20 Canada, which is expected to be held in July this year with three venues being earmarked in Toronto. The three venues are Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club (where Sahara Cup was played for three seasons between India and Pakistan), Sunnybrook Park, Maple Leaf Cricket Club. Four Canadian local players will be playing in every squad, with T20 freelancers from Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand expected to ply their trade. A high-powered Cricket Advisory Board to be formed made up of eminent former players. The likes of Brendon McCullum, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo are all expected to play. According to a media release, the league has been "conceptualised, designed, developed and managed by Mercuri Group with Cricket Canada, the official governing body for the sport in the country". Shubhankar makes three-under start in Qatar Masters
Rising Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma overcame a double bogey to post a three-under 69 in the opening round of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, here today. The 21-year-old, who is on top of both the European and Asian Tour Order of Merit lists by virtue of two wins in less than two months, had five birdies against one double bogey and was lying tied-38th. Five-time world champion M C Mary Kom (48kg) today assured herself of a third successive international medal by advancing to the semifinals of the 69th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament for men and women here today. Bhullar eyes home glory at Hero Indian Open
Indias Gaganjeet Bhullar will be aiming to add a ninth Asian Tour victory and a first on home soil, when he tees off for the prestigious Hero Indian Open in a fortnight. The 29-year-old Bhullar, who has won eight Asian Tour titles across Asia but never in India, is determined to shine in front of his home crowd when the event gets underway at the challenging DLF Golf and Country Club in New Delhi from March 8 to 11. 'Injured' Gunaratne ruled out of T20I tri-series
In a major blow to Sri Lanka, batsman Asela Gunaratne has been ruled out of the Nidahas Trophy T20I tri-series, also featuring India and Bangladesh due to a right-arm injury.The 32-year-old sustained an injury on his right arm while diving during one of the fielding drills and getting his arm caught in an awkward position during the Bangladesh tour.Confirming the news, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said that the status of Gunaratne's injury is diagnosed as a ''Grade II rotator cuff strain with contusion'' and that he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the High-Performance Center of the SLC.Last month, Gunaratne had appeared in the ODI series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, managing low scores of six, nine, 16 and four.The T20I tri-series is slated to begin on March 6, with the first match to be played between India and Sri Lanka at the R.
