Man City's Kompany hails 'hardest' Premier League title

Vincent Kompany said Manchester City's Premier League title win on Sunday was the "hardest" he had experienced after Pep Guardiola's men held off Liverpool on a dramatic final day. City won 4-1 on the south coast, with Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan on the scoresheet after Glenn Murray gave the home side a shock lead in the first half. A 14th straight league win ensured Guardiola's men pipped Liverpool by a solitary point as the Reds' long wait to win the league continued despite a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Anfield that saw them post the third highest points tally in Premier League history. "Back to back... I think it was the hardest, most tough Premier League ever," Kompany told Sky Sports. "Liverpool was exceptional. I don't meant to rub it in, it is what it is, they didn't deserve to lose. "It makes me so much more happy that we played such a great team all season. We had our backs to the wall, we won at the Etihad and today we were able to stay in

Defiant Liverpool turn to Euro dreams as title bid ends in frustration

As the clock ticked down on Liverpool's unsuccessful bid to win their first English title in 29 years, a defiant refrain echoed around Anfield as all four sides of the famous old stadium chanted "We shall not be moved, we're the team that's gonna win the European Cup". Liverpool may have fallen just a point short in the title race after Manchester City retained the Premier League crown with their 4-1 victory at Brighton. But the Anfield faithful were determined to remind the world that Sunday's 2-0 win against Wolves in their last domestic game of the season wasn't the end of an incredible campaign for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's side hope to turn the agony of their title near-miss into the ecstasy of a sixth European Cup when they face Tottenham in the Champions League final on June 1. Tuesday's incredible 4-0 win against Barcelona that erased a 3-0 first leg deficit and sent Liverpool to their second successive Champions League final, ensuring their last shot at winning the title for .

'He's a joy, I love him': Bernardo fuels City's title triumph

Bernardo Silva emerged as the understated driving force behind Manchester City's Premier League title triumph after the Portugal playmaker finally won over Pep Guardiola. While the two major player of the year awards in England went to his City teammate Raheem Sterling and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, Bernardo has delivered a sublime season that deserves its own recognition. In a campaign during which City were without the injured Kevin De Bruyne for long periods while David Silva only occasionally reached peak form, it was Bernardo who provided their creative impetus time and again. It is a remarkable transformation for the diminutive 24-year-old, who has gone from a fringe player last season to one of the first names on the teamsheet for City boss Guardiola. Bernardo started only 15 Premier League games in his first season as he struggled to convince the manager that he was ready for the physically demanding nature of English football. But, from the moment he starred in the ...

Man City batter Brighton to retain Premier League title

Manchester City held off a titanic challenge from Liverpool to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title by coming from behind to beat Brighton 4-1 on Sunday. A 14th straight league win ensured Pep Guardiola's men pipped Liverpool by a solitary point as the Reds' long wait to win the league continued despite a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Anfield that saw them post the third highest points tally in Premier League history. City remain on course to complete the first ever domestic treble in English football in the FA Cup final next weekend as goals from Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan saw the visitors recover from Glenn Murray's shock opener. For 83 seconds Liverpool fans were able to dream, but City showed why they are champions and have racked up a remarkable 98 points, just two shy of their record century of points last season. Liverpool applied as much pressure as they could with their own nine-game winning run to end the ...

Pollard's unique protest earns him reprimand from umpires

In an act rarely seen in cricket, an annoyed Kieron Pollard, to everyone's astonishment, took strike near the tramline before nearly leaving the pitch, attracting the ire of the umpires during the IPL final here Sunday. Mumbai Indians' Pollard, though, adamantly stood his ground in protest during the summit clash against Chennai Super Kings. Bowling the final over of the MI innings, Dwayne Bravo, finding birthday boy Pollard shuffle repeatedly towards the off-stump from his one-leg guard, cleverly bowled fuller deliveries outside the 'tramline' (marked for wide balls) for three dot balls. On all three occasions, straight umpire Nitin Menon didn't signal wide as expected by Pollard, the reason being the burly batsman's big trigger. After the third dot delivery, Pollard's frustration was evident as he flipped his bat in the air even though he didn't utter a word. Just as Bravo got into his stride to bowl the fourth delivery, Pollard, in a mock gesture, left the stumps open and kept ...

With 26 wickets, Tahir grabs Purple Cap from Rabada

Incidentally, Tahir also became the oldest player at 40 to win the 'Purple Cap' in the league. The ace wrist spinner edged past Rabada, who turned out for Delhi Capitals before injury curtailed his campaign, when he flummoxed Mumbai Indians' Ishan Kishan in the final of the cash-rich league for his 26th wicket. Tahir picked up 26 wickets in 17 matches at a measly economy rate of 6.66. Prior to the summit showdown of the 12th edition, pacer Rabada led the charts with 25 wickets in 12 matches before back injury ended his campaign. Tahir returned with figures of 2/23 in three overs, also picking up the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, besides Kishan. Kishan went for a slog sweep but top edged it, and Suresh Raina took an easy catch at point. His first wicket of the game came in his first over itself when ...

CSK limit Mumbai to below-par 149 in IPL final

Chennai Super Kings dished out a disciplined bowling performance under pressure to restrict Mumbai Indians to 149 for eight in the IPL final here on Sunday. After opting to bat, Mumbai ended up with a below-par total despite Kieron Pollard's unbeaten 25-ball 41. Deepak Chahar (3/26) was impressive once again and so was fellow pacer Shardul Thakur (2/37). The spinners, Harbhajan Singh (0/27) and Imran Tahir (2/23), too played a crucial role in limiting Mumbai Indians. The Rohit Sharma-led side was dealing in sixes early on in their innings with the in-form de Kock collecting three sixes out of the four hit in the first three overs. After a frugal first over, Chahar went for 20 runs in the following one with the South African wicket-keeper batsman going for his strokes on a true surface. Thakur was not spared either as de Kock clobbered him over deep-midwicket for his fourth six before top-edging a short one to Dhoni in the same over. All of a sudden, a promising start got converted ...
