Sports Ministry to launch nationwide month-long Clean India Programme

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur will launch a nationwide month-long Clean India Programme from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to encourage people's participation in cleaning waste, mainly single use plastic. The cleanliness drive, to be organised by the sports ministry, is being taken up as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and will run from October 1 to 31. The programme is being organised in six lakh villages of 744 districts across the country through the networks of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan(NYKS) affiliated Youth Clubs & National Service Scheme affiliated Institutions, said a release. Youth Affairs Secretary Usha Sharma said the aim of the cleanliness drive was to create awareness, mobilise people and ensure their involvement in cleaning waste. Through this mega initiative, 75 lakh kg waste will be collected and disposed with the support and voluntary participation of citizens, the release added. World Women's Chess Championship: India beats Spain in round 2

The Indian team secured its first win in the FIDE World Women's Team Chess Championship by beating Spain 2.5-1.5 in the second pool match here. After drawing 2-2 against Azerbaijan in the first round, the Indian women rode on R Vaishali's win over Sabrina Vega Gutierrez to post a victory in the second Pool A match on Monday night. The team's No.1 player D Harika drew against Ana Matnadze as did Bhakti Kulkarni and Mary Ann Gomes against their respective opponents. Vaishali pulled off a 47-move win over Gutierrez in a Sicilian Four Knights Variation game to provide the crucial point for India. Apart from Harika sharing honours with Matnadze, Kulkarni and Gomes drew against Maria Eizaguerri Floris and Marta Garcia Martin respectively. Thakur to meet sports ministers twice a year to evaluate progress on infra

The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur on Monday held a meeting with state sports ministers to draw a roadmap for preparing the country's athletes for the future."Meeting (with state sports ministers) was held to draw a roadmap to prepare our athletes for future Olympics, Asian Games, & Commonwealth Games. We've agreed to meet at least twice a year, to evaluate progress on better infrastructure," Thakur told reporters after the meeting."We will also be holding regional meetings in various zones and will be looking at creating a dashboard where the data regarding the sports infrastructure available at block level in each state," he added.Following the major success of the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, Thakur interacted with the States and UTs about the ways forward and how they would contribute to the mission to make India a top sporting nation. He was also joined by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Nisith Pramanik.
