Gujarat win to leave champs Patna on brink of elimination

Gujarat Fortunuegiants saw off a spirited fight from defending champions Patna Pirates to secure a 37-29 win in an Inter-Zone Wildcard Pro-Kabaddi League fixture here Wednesday. The loss meant the holders were on the brink of elimination, giving a lifeline to UP Yoddha, who will face Bengal Warriors Thursday to decide the third team from Zone B. Gujarat's defence proved to be the difference as they prevailed over Patna's star-studded attacking lineup featuring the season six's leading raider Pradip Narwal. Captain Sunil Kumar, with five tackle points, was Gujarat's mainstay in the defence as he got a fine support from Iran's Asian Games gold medallist Hadi Oshtorak. Leading by a slender three-point margin with three minutes left on the clock, the duo effected a super tackle to pin down Narwal to give them a decisive 32-28 point advantage. Their defence grew stronger and stronger in the dying minutes as they scored five points in a row to seal their win and topped the group. Narwal ...

Gattuso under pressure as Milan fail to score again

AC Milan's push for a top-four finish in Serie A took a hit on Wednesday as Gennaro Gattuso's side were held to an uneventful 0-0 draw at struggling Frosinone. The seven-time European champions have now failed to score in four consecutive league games for the first time since 1984, managing three goalless stalemates in the process. "To reach our objective of Champions League qualification we can't play the way we did in the first half," Gattuso told DAZN. "I'm the captain of this ship, so it's only right that I take all the responsibility. It's important for me to understand how to make my players play their best, because right now they're performing below their ability. "There's no calmness and they look nervous, that's what I need to think about. As for the rest, anything can happen." Milan remain fifth, behind fourth-placed Lazio on goal difference in the race for Champions League qualification. Milan have said they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after UEFA ...

Travis Head disapproves of MCG crowd booing Marsh

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who replaced local boy Peter Handscomb to get a place in the playing XI, got a hostile reception from the crowd during the opening day of their ongoing Boxing Day Test match against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday. The behaviour did not go down well with Australian batsman Travis Head who termed it as "pretty poor".The spectators, who were apparently unhappy over Marsh replacing Handscomb in the team, welcomed the bowler with loud booing two times during the Day One of the third Test.Head said that such sort of behaviour from the crowd is something that is usually witnessed with players like Virat Kohli but serving the same treatment to Marsh is not great."I don't think it's great, obviously we see it a bit with [Indian captain Virat] Kohli as well. But for Mitch, who worked his bum off today, I thought he bowled exceptionally well, I thought he created great pressure, in tough conditions, fought really hard. So I don't think ..

Steyn claims outright South Africa wicket-taking record

Shaun Pollock on Wednesday described Dale Steyn as "the best fast bowler that South Africa has produced" after Steyn beat his record for the most Test wickets for the country. Steyn broke the record he shared with Pollock when Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman became his 422nd victim on the first day of the first Test at SuperSport Park at Wednesday. Zaman's dismissal brought to an end more than three years of frustration during which the fast bowler missed no fewer than 27 Test matches because of injury. Steyn, 35, was mobbed by his teammates and hoisted on the shoulders of new-ball partner Kagiso Rabada after Zaman (12) edged the ball to Dean Elgar at third slip, reducing Pakistan to 17 for two after winning the toss and batting first. "His performances both home and away have been remarkable," said Pollock in a statement issued by Cricket South Africa. "His injuries of late have been in stark contrast to how well he has managed his body and fitness throughout his career." Pollock said ...

Mitchell Marsh 'booed' at MCG, Head terms it disappointing

Australia batsman Travis Head was Wednesday "disappointed" at the booing of Mitchell Marsh in the ongoing third Test against India, triggered by the West Australian being preferred over local star Peter Handscomb. The MCG crowd started booing Marsh once Marsh's name was announced on the public address system when he came onto bowl in the third Test against India. "I don't think it's great," Head said. "Obviously we've seen it with Kohli as well but for Mitch, who worked his bum off today, I thought he bowled exceptionally well. I thought he created pressure in tough conditions and fought really hard. I don't think any Australian cricketer in Australia deserves to be booed," Head said at the end of the first day's play. Head said that he understood the sentiments that Marsh was preferred over a Victorian. "I understand the Victorian crowd, Petey obviously missing out, but I think it's pretty poor for Mitchy to cop that," he said. According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, "A Facebook page

Didn't think much of wicket: Debutant Mayank Agarwal

Debutant Mayank Agarwal who smashed the highest ever (76) by an Indian opener on Australian soil, doesn't complain much about the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) pitch as he didn't think too much of the wicket."I won't complain about the pitch. It was good to bat on. It did do a bit early on. It was a bit slow and then as the day progressed and we batted after lunch it got a little quicker. I did not think too much of the wicket and I did not put a lot of minds or thought to the wicket before the game," the 27-year-old told the reporters on Wednesday."I just said I want to try and stay blank and take it as it comes and while I am at the wicket let me assess the wicket and let me see how to go about it," he added further.Agarwal also amassed the second highest in away Tests as he remained one short to Sudhir Naik's 77 against England in 1974."I would have liked more. I would definitely take a 76 rather than take something less than that. But with that said I would want to take it on ...
