Plea in SC seeks inauguration of new Parliament building by President

A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a direction to the Lok Sabha secretariat for inauguration of the new Parliament building by President Droupadi Murmu, who is the "first citizen of India and the head of the institution". The petition says the respondents--the Lok Sabha secretariat and the Union of India--are "humiliating" the president by not inviting her for the inauguration. The petition by an apex court lawyer comes amid a massive controversy over the scheduled inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28. Some 20 opposition parties have decided to boycott the ceremony to protest the "sidelining" of the President. In a joint statement on Wednesday, 19 political parties said, "When the soul of democracy has been sucked out of Parliament, we find no value in a new building." The BJP-led NDA shot back, condemning the "contemptuous" decision. "This act is not merely disrespectful; it is a blatant affront to the ...

Damage to flyover: SC refuses to grant bail to directors of private firm

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant anticipatory bail to the directors of a private firm, who have been named as accused in a case lodged in connection with construction of a flyover in Ahmedabad which was closed for public use due to the damage caused to it because of alleged use of sub-standard material. The apex court was hearing a plea filed by four directors of the firm, which had constructed the flyover near a bus terminal at Hatkeshwar, challenging the order passed by the Gujarat High Court this month dismissing their applications seeking anticipatory bail. "It is not a case for anticipatory bail," a vacation bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and P S Narasimha said, adding, "within four years, your bridge is going to collapse. Sorry." An FIR in the case was lodged in April 2023 for the alleged offences punishable under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating). According to the prosecution,

On May 18, the top court had sought the response of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Jain's plea. SC asks NMC to set up panel to examine modes of disability assessment

The Supreme Court has directed the National Medical Council to set up a panel of domain experts to examine a plea for evolving modes of disability assessment of students having mental illnesses, special learning disorder (SLD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for granting quota in admission to MBBS course. The top court's direction came on a petition by Vishal Gupta who was denied reservation in admission to MBBS course under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act on the ground that his mental disability was 55 per cent rendering him ineligible for securing admission in a medical college. Under the Act, if the certifying authority certifies that the disability of a person is not less than 40 per cent then he or she is said to have the benchmark disability, and in that condition, the candidate cannot get the benefit of reservation in admission. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala took note of the submissions of lawyer

SC seeks response of firm Delhi marketing on plea by Zydus against HC order

The Supreme Court on Monday sought the response of a firm to a plea filed by consumer goods company Zydus Wellness challenging an order of the Delhi high court which held that it cannot use the brand name "SugarLite" for its products. A vacation bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and P S Narasimha issued notice to the firm named Delhi Marketing and sought its reply within three weeks. The top court was hearing an appeal filed by Zydus Wellness against the May 12 order of the high court which restrained it from using the brand name "SugarLite" as Delhi Marketing held the rights to use the brand name "SUGARLITE". The firm alleged that Zydus was using a deceptively similar trademark to confuse the customers and sought directions to restrain the company that manufactures nutrition and skin care products from using the SugarLite' brand name. Initially, Delhi Marketing had moved trial court in 2020 seeking permanent injunction for using the trademark SugarLite or any other identical or ...

SC panel, SEBI 'hit walls' in probing Adani group's transactions: Cong

The Congress on Monday alleged that the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee and the SEBI have "hit walls" while investigating the Adani group's transactions and stressed the need for a joint parliamentary committee probe to unravel the truth in the matter. The Congress' assertion comes after a report by the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee said it has found no evidence of stock price manipulation in Adani group companies, while a separate SEBI probe into alleged violation in money flows from offshore entities has "drawn a blank". Taking to Twitter, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tagged a media report which claimed that the Registrar of Companies (Gujarat), in a ruling earlier this month, has held that Adani Power and its officials had violated provisions of the Companies Act, 2013, by not reporting related-party contracts and transactions in the register of contract. "As the Modani brigade desperately tries to spin the Supreme Court Expert Committee's report a

SC stalls DDA's ongoing drive to demolish illegal dwelling units in Delhi

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the DDA to halt for a week its ongoing drive to demolish over 800 alleged illegal dwelling units built on its land at Vishwas Nagar area of east Delhi to enable residents to relocate. While issuing notice to the DDA, represented by lawyer Sunieta Ojha, the bench said it will consider in the second week of July the issue whether the residents, who are sought to be removed from their dwelling units, are entitled for rehabilitation by the land owning agency either under the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board Act or any other law. Six entities under lens for suspicious trading in Adani shares: SC panel

Six entities including four foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) are under lens for suspicious trading in Adani group shares prior to the release of the damning Hindenburg report, the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee has said. There was a build up of short positions in the Adani scips prior to the January 24 release of the Hindenburg report, and substantial profits were booked thereafter as stocks crashed, the 178-page report said. A "short" position is generally the sale of a stock one does not own. Investors who sell short believe the price of the stock will decrease in value. If the price drops, they can buy the stock at the lower price and make a profit. Hindenburg's report claimed that the Adani empire was the "biggest con in corporate history" engaged in a "brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme". Shares of Adani Group, which denied all allegations, likening the US investment firm's report to an attack on India, fell after the Hindenburg report was publi
