'Washington sending arms to Taiwan': China halts arms control talks with US

China on Wednesday said it has suspended the crucial arms control and non-proliferation talks with the US, accusing Washington of continuing arms sales to Taiwan. Announcing this, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian said the US continued sales of weapons to self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as a rebel province that must be reunified with the mainland, even by force. He said that despite Beijing's opposition, the US actions had severely damaged the political atmosphere necessary for continued arms control consultations between the two sides. China has decided to suspend talks with the US on holding a new round of arms control and non-proliferation consultations, Lin told a media briefing here. The responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the US, he said, squarely blaming Washington for the disruption of the talks. China was willing to maintain communication with the US on the issue but only on the condition that the US must respect China's core interests and

Taiwan ups alertness after detecting test-firing by China's missile unit

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said Saturday it was monitoring waves of test-firing by China's missile unit in a region more than 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) from the self-ruled island and that its air force stepped up its alertness. China views the democratic island as a breakaway province that should be reunified with the mainland. According to Taiwan's military news agency, the ministry had detected multiple waves of test-firing operations by China's Rocket Force in Inner Mongolia on Saturday. It did not give details on the tests taken by the force, which takes charge of China's arsenal of missiles. It is not immediately clear whether the tests were related to China's harassment of Taiwan. In recent years, China has ramped up its military activities around the island, which is ruled by the Democratic Progressive Party. In May, Taiwan's newly elected President Lai Ching-te said in his inauguration speech that he wants peace with China and urged it to stop its military threats and .

India, Taiwan pact to facilitate trade of agri goods comes into force

An agreement between India and Taiwan to facilitate trade in organically-produced goods, including tea and medicinal plants, has come into force from July 8, the commerce ministry said on Wednesday. The mutual recognition agreement (MRA) will ease the export of organic products by avoiding dual certifications, thereby reducing compliance cost, simplifying compliance requirements by adhering to only one regulation and enhancing trade opportunities in the organic sector. It said the pact will pave the way for export of major Indian organic products such as rice, processed food, green/black and herbal tea, medicinal plant products to Taiwan. The implementing agencies for the MRA are India's Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Taiwan's Agriculture and Food Agency. "The MRA for organic products between India and Taiwan has been implemented w.e.f. July 8," it said in a statement. Under the pact, agricultural products produced and handled ...

New US envoy to Taiwan vows to help with self-defence amid China threats

The United States' new top envoy to Taiwan promised Wednesday that Washington will help the self-ruled island defend itself as China ramps up its military threats. Raymond Greene, who assumed his new role as director of the American Institute in Taiwan on Monday, met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. First of all, and the most important thing, the U.S. will strongly support Taiwan's self-defense capabilities, Greene said. We both have common and long-term interests in peace and stability over the Taiwan Strait. Lai said Taiwan will strive to maintain the status quo with Beijing, which claims the island democracy of 23 million people as its own territory, to be reclaimed by force if necessary. Taiwan's Defense Ministry also said Wednesday it detected 36 Chinese military jets, including J-16 fighters and H-6 bombers, flying south and southeast of the island and headed into the Western Pacific to carry out drills with China's Shandong aircraft carrier. The U.S., like most countr

Foreign firms must adapt to India's biz environment: TAITRA on Foxconn row

Amid the controversy surrounding Foxconn's hiring practices, Taiwanese trade promotion organisation TAITRA on Monday said that there could be some cultural issues but all foreign companies including Taiwanese firms operating in India need to adapt to the country's business environment. His comment has come against the backdrop of media reports claiming that Taiwan-headquartered Foxconn, a contract manufacturer of Apple iPhones, is allegedly discriminating against married women by not hiring them to work at its unit in Tamil Nadu. Rejecting the reports, Foxconn last month purportedly informed the government that 25 per cent of its new hires are married women and its safety protocol, which requires all employees to avoid wearing metal irrespective of gender or religion, is not discriminatory. Refusing to be drawn into controversy regarding Foxconn's hiring practices, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Chairman James C F Huang emphasised that every Taiwanese company com

China deploys aircraft carrier off Philippine coast amid tensions

China has deployed its second aircraft carrier 'Shandong' which was spotted patrolling waters off the Philippine coast as Manila stepped up efforts to assert its claims over a shoal in the disputed South China Sea firmly opposing Beijing's counterclaims. Shandong, an aircraft carrier with a displacement of about 70,000 tonnes, was seen patrolling the waters of the Philippines which serves as a deterrence against "continuous Philippine provocations" on Chinese islands and reefs in the South China Sea, state-run Global Times media reported on Monday. The aircraft carrier is likely on a scheduled exercise that could also prepare it for a potential far sea voyage into the West Pacific, it quoted Chinese experts as saying. Shandong's deployment comes after the People's Liberation Army (PLA) deployed major surface combat ships, including large and medium destroyers as well as the main amphibious landing ship in the South China Sea as the maritime territorial conflict with Manila ...
