SSC posts list of 183 'ineligible' candidates appointed as teachers

The West Bengal Central School Service Commission has posted on its website a list of 183 candidates, who did not qualify in the 2016 examination, but still figured in the merit list and were appointed in educational institutions. West Bengal recruitment scam: SC stays Calcutta HC order of CBI probe

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Calcutta High Court orders directing CBI investigation into filing of an application by the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (SSC) in a case related to the teachers' recruitment scam. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli also stayed the part of the order by which the single-judge bench of the high court had summoned West Bengal Principal Secretary Manish Jain before it Friday in relation to the filing of the fresh application by the West Bengal Central SSC. "Presently, when I am arguing here, the principal secretary is in the dock before the high court," senior advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for the state government, told the bench. "There shall be a stay on the high court orders," the CJI said and listed the plea of the state government after three weeks. Over 20,000 schools shut down in India during 2020-21, says govt

More than 20,000 schools shut down across the country during 2020-21 while the number of teachers also declined by 1.95 pc in comparison to the previous year, according to a new report by the Ministry of Education. The Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report on school education in India for 2021-22 also pointed out that only 44.85 per cent schools had computer facilities while nearly 34 per cent had internet connection. "Total number of schools in 2021-22 stood at 14.89 lakhs as compared to 15.09 lakhs in 2020-21. The decline in total schools is mainly due to closure of schools under private and other management," said the report launched on Thursday. While only 27 per cent schools have special toilets for children with special needs (CSWN), over 49 per cent of them have ramps with handrails, it said. Teaching should be such that there is no need for homework: Maha minister

Teaching at schools should be of such quality that there would be no need to assign homework to children, Maharashtra School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar said on Friday. He will speak to all stake-holders and see if some policy decision can be taken as children must not be "overburdened", he said, talking to reporters here. "My personal opinion is that children should not be over-burdened and their brains should be allowed to develop. Homework should not be an excuse for teachers. Whatever we teach for half-an-hour, it should be taught with full concentration so that there is no need of doing homework," he said. This is my personal opinion. I will talk to teachers associations and institutions and then take a decision, he added. Last month Kesarkar had said that the education department was thinking of adding blank pages to text books for taking down notes, so that children do not need to carry separate notebooks which make their school bags heavy.

BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali on Saturday alleged the Uttar Pradesh government's policy on madrasas is proving to be a double-edged sword for their teachers as it is not paying them honorarium and creating fear among unrecognised Islamic seminaries. The Uttar Pradesh government on August 31 announced that it will conduct a survey of unrecognised madrasas in the state to gather information about the number of teachers, curriculum, their affiliation with any non-government organisation and basic facilities available there, among other things. "The Uttar Pradesh government's policy is proving to be a double-edged sword for madrasa teachers. On the one hand, it (government) is not giving honorarium to the teachers of recognised madrasas and on the other, it is creating fear amongst unrecognised madrasas," Ali said in a tweet in Hindi.
