100 per cent webcasting of all polling booths in Tripura: CEO

The Election Commission of India has taken initiative for 100 per cent webcasting of all polling booths in Tripura, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sriram Taranikanti said on Wednesday. "Video viewing and surveillance teams would be deployed across the state, which would monitor all poll activities inside the polling booths on the day of voting. Sufficient CCTV cameras and mobile teams would be deployed to maintain total security. We aim to maintain 100 per cent webcasting on the polling days," he told reporters. The CEO said the concerned district magistrates would monitor everything from their offices, adding presiding officers would provide inputs to corroborate the videos. "The areas, where internet coverage is poor, video recording would be done and the recorded clips would be submitted to the District Election Officers. Tripura is the only state in the country which will implement 100 per cent webcasting of Lok Sabha elections this year," he said. Elections for the ..

Dark matter not made up of tiny black holes: Study

Dark matter is not made up of primordial black holes smaller than a tenth of a millimetre, say scientists who have put the theory put forward by the late Stephen Hawking to its most rigorous test to date. About 85 per cent of the matter in the universe is believed to be made up of dark matter. Its gravitational force prevents stars in our Milky Way from flying apart. However, attempts to detect such dark matter particles using underground experiments, or accelerator experiments including the world's largest accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, have failed so far, according to the study published in the journal Nature Astronomy. This has led scientists to consider Hawking's 1974 theory of the existence of primordial black holes, born shortly after the Big Bang, and his speculation that they could make up a large fraction of the elusive dark matter scientists are trying to discover. Researchers led by Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe in Japan used the ..

S Korea to launch world's first national 5G networks

South Korea launches the world's first fully-fledged 5G mobile networks Friday, a transformational leap that already has superpowers sparring for control of an innovation that could potentially change the day-to-day lives of billions of people. The superfast communications heralded by fifth-generation wireless technology will ultimately underpin everything from toasters to telephones; from electric cars to power grids. But while the South has won the race to be first to provide the user experience, that is only one part of a wider battle that has pit the United States against China and ensnared giants including Huawei. Hyper-wired South Korea has long had a reputation for technical prowess, and Seoul has made the 5G rollout a priority as it seeks to stimulate stuttering economic growth. The system will bring smartphones near-instantaneous connectivity -- 20 times faster than the existing 4G -- allowing users to download entire movies in less than a second. In the same way that 3G ...

AI to help recognise, assess violinist's gestures

Scientists have developed a novel artificial intelligence (AI) system that provides real-time accurate information about a violinist's movements when playing the instrument. Gestures are extremely important, in part because they are directly related to the sound and the expressiveness of the musicians, said researchers from Pompeu Fabra University in Spain. Technology already exists that can capture the movement and is capable of detecting gestural details very precisely. In a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, thE researchers applied AI to the automatic classification of violin bow gestures according to the performer's movement. "We recorded movement and audio data corresponding to seven representative bow techniques performed by a professional violinist," researchers said in a statement. "We obtained information about the inertial motion from the right forearm and we synchronised it with the audio recordings," they said. After extracting the characteristics of .

Researchers develop new material that changes colours like neon tetra fish

Researchers at the North Carolina State University have developed a new material that is inspired by nature and is capable of changing colour. The colour-changing material is inspired by the flashing colours of the neon tetra fish, 150sec.com reports. The material relies on the use of a magnetic field which changes the orientation of a formation of nanocolumns. The material has four layers incorporating silicon substrate coated with a polymer which had been embedded with iron oxide nanoparticles. It consists of a regular array of micron-wide pedestals that results in the polymer layer resembling a Lego brick.By changing the angle of the columns, the wavelength of light shifts that is most strongly reflected by the material. In practical terms, the material changes colour. The camouflaging technology can have a potential military use case.
