Wood-based flexible tech creates electricity from body heat

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have transformed a piece of wood into a flexible membrane that generates power from the same type of electric current that the human body runs on. This energy is generated using charged channel walls and other unique properties of the wood's natural nanostructures, according to researchers from University of Maryland in the US. With the technology, researchers can use a small temperature difference to efficiently generate voltage. Trees grow channels that move water between the roots and the leaves. These are made up of fractally-smaller channels, and at the level of a single cell, channels just nanometres or less across. The team has harnessed these channels to regulate ions, according to the study published in the journal Nature Materials. The researchers used basswood, which is a fast-growing tree with low environmental impact. They treated the wood and removed two components - lignin, that makes the wood brown and adds strength, and ...

AI discovers two planets from space telescope data

Scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover two more hidden planets in the data collected by the Kepler space telescope. The technique shows promise for identifying many additional planets that traditional methods could not catch. Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin in the US created an algorithm that sifts through the data taken by Kepler to ferret out signals that were missed by traditional planet-hunting methods. The process, described in the The Astronomical Journal, should help astronomers find many more missed planets hiding in Kepler data. "K2 data is more challenging to work with because the spacecraft is moving around all the time," said Andrew Vanderburg, from UT Austin. This change came about after a mechanical failure. While mission planners found a workaround, the spacecraft was left with a wobble that AI had to take into account. The Kepler and K2 missions have already discovered thousands of planets around other stars, with an equal ...

Apple facing US import ban on some iPhones in tech dispute

A trade court judge will recommend banning some iPhones from being imported into the US after concluding Apple's best-selling device infringed on technology owned by mobile chip maker Qualcomm. The US Trade International Trade Commission decision is the latest twist in a bitter legal dispute between Qualcomm and Apple over the rights to some of the technology that enables the iPhone to connect to the internet. It's unclear if the recommended ban will be imposed or even which iPhone models would be affected. McNamara's recommendation still must be weighed by the full trade commission. Qualcomm applauded the decision. Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

TV viewers may soon be able to switch service providers without changing set top box

TV viewers may be able to switch their DTH or cable service providers without changing the set top box (STB) by the end of this year, according to regulator Trai's Chairman R S Sharma. "Since last two years we have been trying to make STBs interoperable. Large part of problem has been resolved. There are some business challenges (which) remain... we are looking at this to happen by end of this year," Sharma told reporters at an event here Tuesday. He added that interoperability in a product should not come as an "after thought" but should be in place at the product planning stage itself. "Open systems are going to be the future. Entire back-end of Aadhaar has been developed on open source software except biometric de-duplication system," Sharma said. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman released a study on open ecosystem for devices in India, prepared by the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and consultant firm KPMG, which showed that 89 per cent
