Apple on Monday unveiled a star-packed original video service along with a subscription plan for magazines and newspapers as part of a new strategic move for the iPhone maker. The US tech giant, aiming to emphasize digital content and services to make up for a slump in smartphone sales, also announced Apple Arcade, a game subscription service for mobile and other devices. Director Steven Spielberg, TV host Oprah Winfrey and Hollywood stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carrell made appearances at the event, which puts Apple in competition with Netflix, Google, Amazon and others in various segments. The Apple TV+ service -- an on-demand, ad-free subscription service launching this year in 100 countries -- will compete with services such as Netflix and Hulu with Apple investing heavily in its own content, while upgrading its TV application for third-party services. Telegram's new tool permits nuking messages once and for all

Telegram has added a new feature which will let you take care of messages you don't want to keep, whether it is your own or sent by someone else. The new 'nuclear option' is a delete feature that allows a user to selectively delete their own messages or messages sent by someone in a chat. As TechCrunch explains, it does not require one to have composed the original message or begun a chat thread to delete messages.Essentially, it is like the one final weapon you can use to wipe out communication both from your own inbox and the inboxes of others. The feature is a far cry from the current reputation-saving 'unsend' or 'delete' feature which lets you recall or remove unpleasant texting before someone notices because there is no record of the deleted message. The 'nuclear option' is available on the updated version 5.5 of Telegram that is billed as offering more privacy to its users.

'Chandrayaan 2 will carry NASA's laser instruments to Moon'

India's lunar mission Chandrayaan 2, scheduled to launch next month, will carry NASA's laser instruments that allow scientists to make precise measurements of the distance to the Moon, according to the US space agency officials. During the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference held at Texas, US last week, NASA confirmed that Chandrayaan 2 and Israeli lander Beresheet, due to touch down April 11, will each carry NASA-owned laser retroreflector arrays. "We're trying to populate the entire surface with as many laser reflector arrays as we can possibly get there," Lori Glaze, acting director of the Planetary Science Division of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, was reported as saying by 'Space.com'. Retroreflectors are sophisticated mirrors, that reflect laser light signals sent from the Earth. The signals can help pinpoint precisely where the lander is, which scientists can use to precisely calculate the Moon's distance from Earth. While five such instruments already exist on the ...

New tech to combat vehicle number plate thefts

Researchers are set to launch trials of technologies that could improve vehicle identification and combat number plate thefts and misuse. One technology being trialled is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sticker on a vehicle's front windscreen which will act as a third number plate, according to researchers from La Trobe university in Australia. The sticker would self-destruct when removed, enabling police to identify vehicles that are suspected to have a stolen or cloned number plate. The second technology is Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), a digital technology that can communicate with road infrastructure and could also be used to identify automated vehicles in the future. Additional security features for number plates, like holographic patterns on driver's licences and passports will also be tested. New digital identification methods would make it harder for an offender to hide a vehicle's identity as the additional identifiers will not match a stolen or cloned ...

Self-powered, washable textiles may pay way for smart clothing

Scientists have developed a textile-based display technology that is washable and does not require an external power source, paving the way for smart clothes. When we think about clothes, they are usually formed with textiles and have to be both wearable and washable for daily use. However, smart clothing has had a problem with its power sources and moisture permeability, which causes the devices to malfunction. To ease out the problem of external power sources and enhance the practicability of wearable displays, Professor Kyung Cheol Choi from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) fabricated their wearing display modules on real textiles that integrated polymer solar cells (PSCs) with organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). PSCs have been one of the most promising candidates for a next-generation power source, especially for wearable and optoelectronic applications because they can provide stable power without an external power source, while OLEDs can be ...
