Automobile sales skid in May as coronavirus second wave bites hard

Major automobile manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and Toyota Kirloskar on Tuesday reported decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales in May compared to the previous month as a spike in COVID-19 cases and lockdowns across various states hit production and dispatches. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), which shut production from May 1 to May 16 so as to divert oxygen from industrial use for medical purposes, reported domestic dispatches to dealers at 35,293 units last month, down 75 per cent from 1,42,454 units in April. The company said sales of its mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, declined by 81 per cent to 4,760 units in May as against 25,041 units in April this year. Sales of compact segment vehicles, including Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire, declined by 72 per cent to 20,343 units from 72,318 cars in April. Labour strike ends at Toyota Kirloskar Motor's Karnataka plant

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Tuesday said the labour strike at its Bidadi-based manufacturing plant in Karnataka has come to an end. In November last year, the automaker hadto declare a lockout at the facility following workers' union members resorting to a sit in strike at the factory premises to protest against the suspension of a worker. "The TKM Employee's Union has officially called off the ongoing labour strike...Although a majority of members from a total of 3,350 employees had already voluntarily resumed work earlier, the labour strike that has been continuing has now officially come to an end today," TKM said in a statement. The company said that the Karnataka government and the Department of Labour, played a crucial role in facilitating the reconciliation, between all parties. Toyota Kirloskar posts 14% growth in India sales at 7,487 units for Dec

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Friday reported 14 per cent growth in its domestic sales to 7,487 units in December 2020. The car maker had sold 6,544 vehicles in December 2019. "As we wrap up the year, we are happy to have registered a 14 per cent growth in wholesales in December 2020, when compared to sales in the same period in 2019," said Naveen Soni, Senior Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM). He said customer orders have been rising significantly and retail sales (dealer's sale to customers) have also been very encouraging which gives the company confidence to embark upon a new target as it welcomes the New Year 2021. "We have also managed to retain more than 6 per cent growth in wholesales in the last quarter of calendar year 2020, when compared to the last quarter of 2019," he added.
