Poland says Ukraine ready to offer electricity as coal alternative

Ukraine is ready to supply Poland with electricity and help reduce the use of coal for power generation in light of an anticipated energy crisis, the Polish prime minister said Friday. Poland's premier Mateusz Morawiecki and Latvia's President Egils Levits, were in Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about military and energy security amid the region's efforts to roll back its dependence on Russian energy sources. Morawiecki thanked Zelenskyy for his "understanding" and readiness to provide needed assistance in a short time. Today, because of the embargo on Russian coal, we are bringing in coal from around the world," Morawiecki said during a joint news conference. If we are not to burn it in Polish power plants, we could use some energy from Ukraine, if possible. I was told by the president that yes, it will be possible, shortly, Morawiecki said. Zelenskyy spoke of steps to overcome a potential, future energy crisis. The leaders also discussed ways of urg

Blinken, in Kyiv, unveils $2 bn in new US military aid for Europe

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday announced major new military aid worth more than 2 billion dollars for Ukraine and other European countries threatened by Russia. Blinken said the Biden administration would provide $2 billion in long-term military assistance to Ukraine and 18 of its neighbours, including NATO members and regional security partners most potentially at risk for future Russian aggression." That's on top of a $675-million package of heavy weaponry, ammunition and armoured vehicles for Ukraine alone that Defense Secretary Llloyd Austin announced earlier Thursday at a conference in Germany. The contributions bring total U.S. aid to Ukraine to $15.2 billion since the administration took office. Officials said the new commitments were intended to show that American support for the country in the face of Russia's invasion is unwavering. The announcements came as fighting between Ukraine and Russia has intensified in recent days, with Ukrainian forces moun

Russia using filtration centers to interrogate, abuse Ukrainians: WH

American intelligence shows that Russia is using filtration centers in eastern Ukraine and Western Russia to detain, interrogate and in some cases abuse thousands of Ukrainians, a senior White House official has said. Addressing media persons during her daily news briefings, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the US assess that the Kremlin views filtration operations as crucial to their efforts to annex areas of Ukraine under their control. At the United Nations later in the day, US Ambassador to the UN Thomas-Greenfield demanded that Russia halt its filtration operations immediately and allow the UN independent observers and humanitarian and human rights organisations access to these filtration sites and to those who have been sent to Russia. The US ambassador presented newly downgraded information to the UN Security Council, saying that that the United States has information that officials from Russia's Presidential administration are overseeing and ...

Putin mocks West, says Russia will press on military action in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow will press on with its military action in Ukraine until reaching its goals and mocked Western attempts to drive Russia into a corner with sanctions. Putin told at an annual economic forum in the far-eastern port city of Vladivostok that the main goal behind sending troops into Ukraine was protecting civilians in the east of that country after eight years of fighting. It wasn't us who started the military action, we are trying to put an end to it, Putin said, reaffirming his argument that he sent troops into Ukraine to protect Moscow-backed separatist regions in Ukraine, which have fought Ukrainian forces in the conflict that erupted in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea. All our action has been aimed at helping people living in the Donbas, it's our duty and we will fulfill it until the end, he said. Putin charged that Russia has strengthened its sovereignty in the face of Western sanctions, which he said bordered

China could use US oil to support Ukraine's invasion, say GOP lawmakers

A group of GOP lawmakers has expressed concerns that US oil to Unipec America, a company operated by the Chinese Communist Party, could be used by China to support Russia's invasion of Ukraine. To ensure the Biden administration is properly managing the sale of critical assets, the lawmakers are once again calling on Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm to provide an immediate briefing and all documents and communications related to the SPR sale. "We are continuing oversight of the US Department of Energy's depletion of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). According to DOE, the Biden administration recently sold almost a million barrels of SPR oil to Unipec America, a subsidiary of Sinopec, a company owned by the Chinese Communist Party," said House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer and Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Ranking Member Nancy Mace. "In addition to concerns with Hunter Biden, the President's son, ..

UN monitors head to Ukraine nuclear plant amid concerns over radiation leak

A team of international nuclear inspectors was heading Wednesday to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant caught in the middle of the fighting in southern Ukraine amid international concern of a potential accident or radiation leak. Rafael Grossi, the head of the the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he hoped to establish a permanent mission in Ukraine to monitor Europe's largest nuclear plant. These operations are very complex operations. We are going to a war zone. We are going to occupied territory. And this requires explicit guarantees from not only from the Russians, but also from the Republic of Ukraine, Grossi said in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv before the monitoring the mission's departure. We have been able to secure that. ... So now we are moving. The power plant has been occupied by Russian forces and operated by Ukrainian workers since the early days of the 6-month-old war. The site was recently temporarily cut off from the electrical grid because of fire damag

US has concerns about any country exercising with Russia: Official

The United States has concerns about any country conducting an exercise with Russia which has waged an unprovoked and brutal war against Ukraine, the White House said Tuesday. It said this in response to a question on a multinational military exercise -- called "Vostok 2022" -- from September 1-7 in Russia which among others would be attended by India and China. This will be the first large-scale multinational military exercise in Russia since the beginning of its offensive in Ukraine. "The United States has concerns about any country exercising with Russia while Russia wages an unprovoked, brutal war against Ukraine. But, of course, every participating country will make its own decisions. And I'll leave it at that," White House Press Secretary Karen Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard the Air Force One. When she was specifically asked why "not put any pressure on India", Jean-Pierre said, "My first sentence there is saying that we have concerns over any country exercising with Russi
