Hindenburg refutes 'hedge fund' links, says not under US SEC probe

US short-seller Hindenburg Research has said it is not under investigation by the US SEC as it rubbished alleged links of its founder to a hedge fund for preparing reports targeting companies. "Hindenburg is not under investigation by the SEC, to our knowledge, and any suggestion to the contrary is false," the firm said after a Canadian portal cited documents filed before a court in Ontario to allege that its founder Nate Anderson was under cloud for alleged links with hedge funds. Citing a cache of documents filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in a complex defamation lawsuit, the Market Frauds portal said the head of Canada's Anson hedge fund, Moez Kassam admitted his firm has shared research "with a wide variety of sources" including Hindenburg's Nate Anderson. Hindenburg colluded with Anson while preparing a report. The preparation of bearish reports without disclosure of participation can be charged as securities fraud by the US Securities and Exchange Commission ...

India-US ties need shared values, not only be transactional: Richard Verma

Richard Verma, the highest-ranking Indian-American official in the State Department, has expressed optimism about the future of US-India ties and emphasised the need to base the relationship on shared values rather than mere transactional dealings. Verma, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, said he is not worried about the differences between the US and India as they make the relationship more dynamic. "What I don't want this to become, though, is a transactional relationship where we're just looking to sell things or you're looking to have us buy things, Verma told PTI in an interview on Friday, as he prepares to leave office. "That is not a deep, consequential relationship built on values. I think staying true to those principles is really...important, said Verma, who previously served as America's Ambassador to India, making him the first Indian American in that position. President Joe Biden will cede power to President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, marking .

From backing a ban to being hailed as saviour: Inside Trump's TikTok shift

During his first term as president, Donald Trump led the effort to ban TikTok, the hugely popular video-sharing app he said posed a threat to US national security. But on the eve of his return to the White House, the president-elect is being hailed as the app's saviour. After going dark for users this weekend, Trump said on his social media site that he would issue an executive order after he's sworn in for a second term on Monday to delay a TikTok ban "so that we can make a deal to protect our national security". He said the order would make clear that companies will not be held liable for violating a law that aimed to force TikTok's sale by its China-based parent company. Hours later, the app returned, much to the relief of its legions of dedicated users. "Thanks for your patience and support. As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the US!" read the announcement. Trump's legal authority to unilaterally decide not to enforce the law, which passed with ...

Fire-ravaged Southern California braces for gusty winds, high wildfire risk

Southern Californians are bracing for gusty winds and a heightened risk of wildfires, less than two weeks after deadly blazes killed at least 27 people and ravaged thousands of homes. The National Weather Service has issued warning of a "particularly dangerous situation" for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning due to low humidity and damaging Santa Ana winds. Gusts could peak at 113 kmph along the coast and 161 kmph in the mountains and foothills. Windy weather and single-digit humidity are expected to linger through Thursday, said Rich Thompson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. He said the fire risk is also elevated because the region hasn't seen rain since April. Critical fire weather with wind gusts up to 97 kmph was also forecast for other Southern California communities on Monday and Tuesday stretching to San Diego, with residents urged to take steps to get ready to evacuate such as creating an emergency kit

TikTok restores service for US users after Trump pledges to halt ban

TikTok began restoring service to its users in the US on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the app went dark under a new federal ban. President-elect Donald Trump, speaking at a rally, vowed to issue an executive order on his first day in office to delay the enforcement of the law, ensuring the short-video app used by 170 million Americans remains operational. "We have to save it," Trump declared, signalling plans for a joint venture that would grant the US a significant ownership stake in the platform. TikTok credited Trump's intervention for providing "clarity and assurance" to its service providers, enabling the app's rapid return. The law, signed by President Joe Biden last April, required ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to divest the app by January 19 to avoid a ban. While Trump's move has sparked hope among TikTok users, questions remain about how he will reconcile his executive action with the legislation.

Biden pardons Black nationalist Garvey, 4 others, commutes 2 sentences

President Joe Biden on Sunday posthumously pardoned Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, who influenced Malcolm X and other civil rights leaders and was convicted of mail fraud in the 1920s. Also receiving pardons were a top Virginia lawmaker and advocates for immigrant rights, criminal justice reform and gun violence prevention. Congressional leaders had pushed for Biden to pardon Garvey, with supporters arguing that Garvey's conviction was politically motivated and an effort to silence the increasingly popular leader who spoke of racial pride. After Garvey was convicted, he was deported to Jamaica, where he was born. He died in 1940. The Rev Martin Luther King Jr said of Garvey: "He was the first man, on a mass scale and level" to give millions of Black people "a sense of dignity and destiny." It's not clear whether Biden, who leaves office Monday, will pardon people who have been criticised or threatened by President-elect Donald Trump. Issuing preemptive pardons -- for actual or

India-US relationship truly an enduring story of love for ages: Garcetti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden raised the "compelling and consequential" partnership between the US and India to new heights, outgoing US ambassador Eric Garcetti said on Sunday. "What was seen as unthinkable a generation ago will seem as indispensable a generation from now, thanks to the work of these leaders and the people of our nations," he said in a post on 'X' after meeting Modi. In an emotional short video, the outgoing US envoy described India as his "second home" and said that he is leaving as a "lifelong" friend and supporter of US-India partnership for the future. He said the India-US relationship is "truly an enduring story of love for the ages" and that "we are only getting started". "How do I say thank you to the most hospitable people in the world?" he said in the video. "Your people's dosti and zinda-dili touched me every day. Your festivals, your music, your art, your cuisine -- all have left an indelible mark on my soul," he added. Garcetti

How the White House is preparing for incoming US President Donald Trump

Most presidents get to move into the White House once. President-elect Donald Trump is doing it twice, and his wife, Melania, says it's a lot easier the second time around. I know where I will be going. I know the rooms where we will be living. I know the process, the incoming first lady said recently. She described their first move to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in 2017 as challenging. Regardless of who is president, the whole process also challenges the White House residence staff: The maids, butlers and others who look after the president's private living space have about five hours from start to finish on Inauguration Day to move out one first family and settle in the next one. Everything needs to be planned to the minute, Melania Trump said on Fox News' Fox & Friends. The clock starts ticking when the outgoing and incoming presidents leave the White House together for a shared limousine ride to the Capitol for the swearing-in. As soon as they leave, the executive residence staff

US rejects Prez Maduro's reelection, keeps financial lifeline for Venezuela

Things seemed to be looking up for Venezuela in 2022. Following years of authoritarian rule and withering economic sanctions, President Nicols Maduro had agreed to work toward a democratic presidential election. The White House, in return, granted him a financial lifeline: a permit for US energy giant Chevron to pump and export Venezuelan oil. Oil wells roared back to life and massive tanker ships returned to Venezuela's coast to be filled with heavy, hard-to-refine crude destined for the US. Maduro's promised election was neither fair nor free, and the longtime president was sworn in this month for a third six-year term despite credible evidence that his opponent got more votes. Yet, the sanctions reprieve the US offered to support the restoration of democracy is still helping fill state coffers. Venezuela's opposition says Maduro's government has earned billions of dollars from exports allowed by the permit. The White House has ignored calls from the main opposition coalition, as
