Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Rajeshwar Singh has written to the Union and the state governments seeking enactment of specific legislation to deal with the cases of desecration of religious texts as the current law legal regime was "insufficient". The legislator has suggested that a specific section can be added through an amendment to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) making sacrilege of religious texts, with an intention to hurt the religious sentiments of the people, punishable with rigorous imprisonment of up to a maximum of five years along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea relating to the demolition drive to clear alleged illegal constructions near the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. As per the cause list of Monday uploaded on the apex court website, the plea would come up for hearing before a bench comprising justices Aniruddha Bose, Sanjay Kumar and SVN Bhatti.
