9 killed as tractor falls into drain in UP's Saharanpur, 4 of them children

A tractor-trolley fell into a drain near Redhibodki village in the Saharanpur district, leaving nine people dead, four of them children, police on Thursday said. The incident took place Wednesday evening in the Tajpura area when a tractor carrying around 50 devotees was on its way to Randaul village for a religious event, Superintendent of Police, City, Abhimanyu Manglik told PTI. On Wednesday, police recovered four bodies from the drain. The victims were identified as Sulochana, 58, Manglesh, 50, and Aditi and Arjun, both aged five and 12. Five bodies recovered on Thursday are yet to be identified, Manglik said. Several people were washed away due to a strong current in the river. A rescue operation is still on to retrieve one missing person, the SP said. The spot was visited by Saharanpur District Magistrate Dr Dinesh Chand and SSP Dr Vipin Tada. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday directed officials to ensure that the benefits of welfare schemes reach the needy. He also asked them to be sensitive towards public issues. The chief minister issued these directions during 'Janata Darshan' held on the premise of Gorakhnath temple here, an official release said. Adityanath directed the officials to initiate strict legal action against those who illegally encroach on people's properties, or try to bully and harm the marginalised. He told them to resolve the people's problems promptly and satisfactorily. A shoe was thrown at senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Swami Prasad Maurya during a party event here on Monday. The shoe did not reach up to Maurya. Party workers overpowered the alleged assailant and thrashed him. "The accused has been taken to a hospital and further details will be known after questioning him," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Lucknow) Aniandy Vikram Singh told PTI. The alleged assailant, Akash Saini, was dressed as a lawyer, the officer said. He was taken into custody by the Vibhuti Khand police. With a view to curb frivolous complaints against entrepreneurs, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed authorities to conduct a preliminary investigation before filing an FIR in case of a complaint against traders. The order that came on Saturday aims to reduce the number of "baseless" FIRs filed against businessmen and traders in the state, which frequently result in harassment and undue pressure, the state government spokesperson said. Now an FIR cannot be lodged directly by any person against entrepreneurs. The order was issued considering the direction given by the Supreme Court in a case, the spokesperson said. Samajwadi Party's social media coordinator Manish Jagan Agarwal has been booked for allegedly making derogatory and abusive posts against former Allahabad university student's union president Richa Singh, officials said. The Allahabad High Court has granted four weeks to the state government and the Lucknow Development Authority to file their counter-affidavits on a plea over the alleged delay in completing the construction of Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre in Gomti Nagar. The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court directed the matter to be listed after four weeks.
