NIA files chargesheet against 5 in weapon loot case

National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against five people today in connection with a 2018 case relating to looting of service weapons from police personnel.Charge Sheet was filed in the Special NIA Court, Lucknow against Gurjant Singh, Jarman Singh, Karamveer Singh, Karam Singh and Amrit Singh under section 120 B, 307, 392 and 397 read with 34 of IPC, section 27 of Arms Act and sections 13(1), 16, 18 and 20 of UA(P) Act.The case pertains to looting of service weapons from two Police personnel from Khala-Kamalpur Check Post, Police Station Jhinjhana, District Shamli on October 10, 2018.NIA has also revealed that during the investigation, it was found that the arrested accused Jarman Singh and others looted service weapons from Police personnel with an intention to further use these weapons to eliminate a senior political the leader of Punjab due to ideological and religious fanaticism."It came on record that Jarman Singh was highly motivated and radicalized to the ...

BJP candidate demands re-poll alleging booth capture by TMC workers

Alleging booth capturing by the Trinamool Congress workers at various polling stations, BJP candidate from Cooch Behar Lok Sabha constituency Nisit Pramanik on Thursday demanded re-polls be conducted at those polling stations."The hooligans of Trinamool Congress (TMC) forcefully removed the polling agents of the BJP from their respective polling booths. There were no paramilitary forces to guard the booths. TMC workers also captured the booths and threatened the voters," Pramanik said in a letter to the state's Electoral Officer.The polling stations where he has demanded re-poll include North Coochbehar, South Coochbehar, Mathabangha, and Sitalkuchi.Nisit alleged that the Trinamool Congress workers captured booths at several places because no paramilitary personnel was guarding the polling stations.Polling for 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal will be held in all seven phases beginning April 11. Nigeria: Buhari summons security chiefs following mass killings

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari summoned his top security chiefs to a closed- doors meeting on Thursday, facing rising pressure to address worsening security, especially in his northwestern political heartlands. The meeting at the presidential statehouse was in response to mounting "kidnapping, banditry and other associated issues confronting the nation", chief of defence staff General Gabriel Olonisakin told reporters. Taliban announce 'ban' on Red Cross, WHO in Afghanistan

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday it had suspended work in Afghanistan after the Taliban announced a "ban" against the humanitarian group and the World Health Organisation. According to a Taliban statement, the ICRC had not "acted upon its agreements" with the Taliban. The insurgents, who control or influence about half of Afghanistan, also accused the WHO of "suspicious movements" during a vaccination campaign. As a result, the Taliban has "decided to ban the operation of these two organisations across the country until further notice," the militants said, noting they would not guarantee health workers' safety. ICRC spokesman Robin Waudo said the organisation had put its activities on hold in war-torn Afghanistan, where many in rural areas have scant access to health care and where polio rates are rising. 61 pc voting in Gadchiroli despite blasts, firing by Naxals

The Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district witnessed two IED blasts and encounters between rebels and security forces Thursday as polling was held for Lok Sabha elections. There was also a blast in the district - part of the Gadchiroli-Chimur constituency - a day before the polling. Despite these incidents, the district recorded an impressive 61.33 per cent voting, an official said. Voting was also held in six other Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra in the first phase of polls. Security forces kill one Naxal in encounter in Chhattisgarh

Naxalites attacked security forces in Narayanpur district on Thursday. In the ensuing encounter, one Naxalite was neutralised while one STF Constable sustained injuries."At around 04:15 pm, Naxals attacked the security forces while they were retreating from the helipad duty for polling parties. Security forces quickly took cover and retaliated in self-defence," said Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit."A country-made pistol, a knife, one bag, and other materials were recovered from the killed Naxalite," he said.The Special Task Force (STF) Constable, identified as Hriday Ram Sahu, has been shifted to a hospital in Orachha.His condition is reported to be normal, added the official. 1 dead, 3 injured in police action on protesters in Kupwara

One person died and three others injured in security forces' action on protestors in Handwara area of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir Thursday, a police official said. Protests broke out in Mandigam area of Handwara in the north Kashmir district after polling for the first phase of parliamentary polls ended, the official said. He said the protesters pelted stones on the polling staff returning from election duty. The security forces accompanying the election staff used force on the protesters and four persons were injured in the action, he said. The injured were taken to a hospital where one of them succumbed, the official said. He said stone-pelting incidents have been reported from a few other places immediately after the polling ended. Some security forces' personnel and polling staff have been injured, the official said, adding details were awaited.

53.06 per cent voter turnout in Bihar

An estimated 53.06 per cent voter turnout was recorded in four Lok Sabha constituencies of Bihar which went to the polls in the first phase on Thursday, a top election official said. Altogether 70.52 lakh voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in the four Lok Sabha seats which had 44 candidates in the fray. "A total of 53.06 per cent voting was recorded in four Lok Sabha constituencies of Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada and Jamui. It was 2.27 per cent higher turnout in these four seats in comparison to 2014 general elections," Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) H R Srinivas told reporters here. "Polling passed off peacefully with sporadic incidents of EVM tampering, attempt to loot booths after which the police had to resort to firing in the open to disperse and control the anti-social elements," CEO said. Dehradun: Inspector, two Constables suspended for allegedly looting money

An inspector of Dehradun Police and two Constables were suspended on Thursday for allegedly looting lakhs of rupees from a person while checking vehicles.According to FIR, the incident took place on April 4 when a person named Anurodh Pawar was stopped and threatened by the police for violating the Model Code of Conduct outside the hotel. Pawar was asked to sit in the police car.Along with policemen, a person was also there in the car. Policemen allegedly pushed him outside the car after driving around for 2-km and fled with the money."The accused have been identified as Dinesh Negi (Inspector), Manoj, Himanshu, and Anupam. Gunbattle between police, Naxals in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli

An encounter took place between security forces and Naxals in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra when a polling party was returning Thursday evening, police said. The Naxal-affected district also witnessed IED blasts at two other places since morning. The skirmish took place at Tumdikasa near Murumgaon Area Operation Post of state police around 4 pm when a team of election officials, CRPF and police was returning, after the voting was over, on foot, an official said. Before the polling party could reach the police post, a group of Naxals opened fire, and CRPF and police personnel retaliated, he said. Naxal killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh on polling day

A Naxal was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on the day of polling for the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency on Thursday, police said. The encounter took place in the restive Orchha area of the district when ultras attacked a team of security forces guarding a helipad, Director General (Anti-Naxal Operation) Girdhari Nayak told PTI. Firing on security forces by the rebels triggered the gunbattle, which left one Naxal dead, he said. The ultras later escaped from the spot, from where the Naxal's body was recovered, Nayak said. A combing operation was underway in the area, around 300 km from state capital Raipur, the IPS officer said. The Naraynpur assembly segment falls in the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency where polling was held Thursday.
