Philippines' Duterte warns China to back off disputed island

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has warned Beijing to back off from a disputed island in the South China Sea, warning of possible military action if China "touches" it amid rising tensions over the key waterway. Duterte, aiming to attract trade and investment from the Asian superpower, has mostly withheld his early criticism of Beijing's expansive claims to the sea -- a point of regional contention because trillions of dollars of goods pass through it. But as the Philippine military warned this week that hundreds of Chinese coast guard and fishing vessels had "swarmed" the Manila-held Pag-asa island, also known as Thitu, the Philippine president spoke out late Thursday. "I will not plead or beg, but I am just telling you that lay off the Pag-asa because I have soldiers there," Duterte said in speech to prosecutors. "If you touch it, that's another story. Then I will tell my soldiers 'prepare for suicide missions'", he added. Duterte has repeatedly said war with China would be ...

French authority rejects pre-emptive 'yellow vest' protest bans

France's Constitutional Council on Thursday struck down a measure that would have let authorities ban certain individuals from protesting, a key element of the government's plan to crack down on violence at "yellow vest" demonstrations. The council, which rules on the validity of laws, said the proposal gave officials "excessive latitude" to justify the individual bans against people suspected of being "a particularly serious threat to law and order." The move was inspired by anti-hooligan measures that keep out known troublemakers from football stadiums, but critics said it arbitrarily infringed on a person's right to freedom of speech and assembly. But the council upheld other measures of the law passed on March 12, such as more severe penalties for organisers of unauthorised demonstrations, and for people who cover their faces during violent protests. Demonstrators who defy protest bans will now face up to six months in prison and fines of up to 7,500 euros (USD 8,400), while those

Rahul has secret agenda with Muslim League: Adityanath

Hours after Congress president Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Wayanad, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday accused him of having a secret agenda in Kerala with the Muslim League, the same organisation which caused the country's division. The BJP leader was apparently referring to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which is a long-time member of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, equating it with the pre-Partition Muslim League. "The country attained freedom in 1947 after hundreds of years. But we also saw the country's unfortunate division on the eve of Independence. It was the Muslim League which had caused the division," he said. "Today, Rahul Gandhi has filed nomination from a seat in Kerala where he has a secret agenda with the Muslim League, the same organisation which was at the root of the country's division, he said. Where is this secret agenda between the Congress and Muslim league going to take the country? What sort of an .

Saudis open consulate in Iraq in sign of improving ties

Saudi Arabia on Friday reopened a consulate in Baghdad for the first time in nearly 30 years and announced a USD 1 billion aid package for Iraq, a sign of improving ties between the two neighbours whose relations have been uneasy for years. The consulate, which will issue visas to Iraqis, was opened at a ceremony in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, during which Iraq's Foreign Minister Mohamed Alhakim raised a green Saudi flag over the building. Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmad Sahhaf said the move was expected to benefit both countries. "This will reflect positively on pilgrims and investors," he told The Associated Press. He said work was also underway to reopen border crossings between Iraq and its southern neighbour. Iraq lies on the fault line between Shiite Iran and the mostly Sunni Arab world, and its relations with the Sunni kingdom have long been troubled. Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iraq when it invaded Kuwait in 1990. Diplomatic relations were resumed in 2015 ...

Cong playing into hands of anti-nationals

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday accused the Congress of playing into the hands of anti-nationals and separatists, saying the party intended to "weaken" the armed forces by promising to review the AFSPA. Adityanath was here to address a rally in support of Ajay Bhatt, the BJP candidate from the Nainital Lok Sabha seat. Yogi said the Congress's poll manifesto proves that the party has pledged its conscience to anti-nationals and separatists and is playing into their hands. "By saying that it would revoke the anti-sedition law and review the (AFSPA), the Congress has made its intentions clear. It wants to give anti-nationals and separatists a free run and weaken the armed forces," he said. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act gives the armed forces certain protection from legal action in carrying out their operations in disturbed areas. Describing Uttarakhand as a land of brave soldiers who are always ready to die for their country, he said the state can never ...

'Dangerous' Congress manifesto demolishes independent structure of media, says Jaitley

But it demolishes otherwise the current structure of independent media in India. India has the privilege of having a multiplicity of print, television, radio and now the digital media," Jaitley wrote on his Facebook post."As a political activist, I hold the view that if some media organisations are opposed to my party's viewpoint, they may constitute a miniscule share in the ocean of media news available. This applies to every other party," he added.Jaitley said that the media chapter on suggestions which will regulate free journalism and multiplicity of India media is "anachronic" and is aimed towards terrorists and insurgents."The dangerous chapter in the media paragraphs is .
