Afghan provincial officials say a Taliban attack on a government compound in western Badghis province has killed at least 20 troops and policemen. Mohammad Nasir Nazari, a provincial councilmember, says the "massive attack" took place before dawn on Thursday, and that it targeted the government headquarters in the district of Balal Murgab. The skirmish took place around noon in a dense forest near Mahla village in Kanker district when a joint team of BSF's 114th battalion and the District Force was out on a search operation, police said. A landmine weighing nearly 15 kg, allegedly planted to target security forces, was recovered in Giridih district, the police said on Wednesday. After getting information that the rebels have devised a strategy to foil the general elections in the Mohanpur forest area, the CRPF and the district police personnel surrounded the area on Tuesday evening, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Giridih, Niraj Kumar Singh, said. The security forces recovered the landmine during a search operation and diffused it, he said. The Maoists took refuge in the deep forest and escaped, he added. The security forces also recovered 407 bullets for SLRs and 588 bullets for other firearms, explosives and Naxal literature, the SDPO said. Giridih goes to polls on May 12.

In a crackdown on firearms ahead of the elections, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police arrested two suspected members of an interstate arms racket and seized 52 illegal pistols from them, police said Wednesday. The accused were identified as Amarikan (25) and Sheetal Singh (22), both residents of Badwani district in Madhya Pradesh, they said. The duo was arrested from near Alok Kunj bus stand in Rohini after a brief chase on March 31 where they had come to deliver a huge consignment of illegal firearms to their contacts here, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell)Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said. The security forces have seized 200 tonne of illegal coal in the jungles of Bokaro district, a police officer said Wednesday.
