The Centre on Monday extended the "disturbed area" tag under AFSPA for three districts of Arunachal Pradesh for six months more while withdrawing it partly from the state's three other districts bordering Assam. According to a Union Home Ministry notification, the decision was taken after considering the present law and order situation in the six districts of the state. As per the notification, the three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, which will continue to be designated as disturbed areas under AFSPA are Tirap, Changlang and Longding. The designation, which allows imposition of AFSPA, will also continue for the four police stations areas of the state's three other districts bordering Assam. They include Namsai and Mahadevpur police stations in Namsai district, Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district and Sunpura in Lohit district. Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Dilbag Singh Monday said a study group has been set up to suggest measures to strengthen security along the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar highway, following the Pulwama terror attack. A total of 123 companies of central paramilitary forces are currently deployed in Assam and the state is prepared for the three-phase Lok Sabha elections, Director General of Police Dr Kuladhar Saikia said. "Thirty three companies of paramilitary forces have recently been sent to the state. Ninety more such companies have also been in Assam for quite sometime," Saikia said. President Ram Nath Kovind will pay tributes to the police and paramilitary personnel killed in the line of duty, including the 40 CRPF men killed in the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, when he visits the National Police Memorial here next week, officials said on Monday. Kovind will pay his respects to the slain security personnel and lay a wreath at the memorial during a remembrance service on April 9 that marks the annual "Valour Day" event of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The National Police Memorial, a 30-foot-tall and 238-tonne black granite structure, was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 21 last year on the occasion of the police commemoration day. It would be the first time that the president would visit the memorial located in the Chanakyapuri area of the national capital, the officials said.
