Army pays tributes to soldier killed in Baramulla encounter

Army today paid tributes to Sowar Vijay Kumar who was killed in an encounter with militants in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. "Army paid befitting tribute to late Sowar Vijay Kumar, who made the supreme sacrifice during a counter terrorist operation on August 3, 2018, in Sopore, wherein two terrorists were eliminated," a defence spokesman said. Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen A K Bhatt and all ranks paid homage to the martyr on behalf of a proud nation, he said. The spokesman said in a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the slain soldier. Kumar had sustained a bullet injury during the fierce gun battle between militants and security forces in Dursoo village yesterday. He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital here, but succumbed to his injuries, the spokesman said. 10 injured in clashes between security forces, stone-pelters at encounter site

At least 10 people were injured today as clashes broke out between security forces and stone-pelters near an encounter site in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir where five militants were killed during an overnight operations, police said. Hundreds of protestors assembled near the encounter site in Kiloora village after the five militants were killed in a gunbattle and started pelting security forces with stones, a police official said. He said the security forces fired pellets and live rounds in air to disperse the mob in face of relentless stone-pelting. Several persons were injured in the security forces' action, he said, adding four of them have been referred to a hospital here for specialised treatment.

Iran protesters attack religious school: Fars news agency

Iran protesters have attacked a religious school in Karaj province near Tehran, the conservative Fars news agency reported on today. "At 9 pm (1530 GMT yesterday) they attacked the school and tried to break the doors down and burn things," Fars quoted the head of the school in the town of Ishtehad, Hojatoleslam Hindiani, as saying. It gave only his clerical rank -- Hojatoleslam -- not his given name. "They were about 500 people and they chanted against the system but they were dispersed by the riot police and some have been arrested,"Hindiani said. Iranian authorities have barely mentioned days of protests in the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad and Tehran, driven by concerns over the economy as well as wider anger at the political system. During past unrest, conservative outlets have focused on attacks against sensitive symbols such as religious buildings as a way of tarnishing the protests. Identification of slain terrorists underway: J-K DGP

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid on Saturday said identification of the four terrorists killed earlier in the day is underway.Speaking to ANI, Vaid said operations were initiated after information of terrorist holed up in Shopian's Killora village was received."We had information that a group of terrorists is there in the area (Shopian's Killora village). Jammu and Kashmir police, Army, Central Reserve Police Force cordoned the area. A terrorist was killed in the encounter last night. The firing was resumed today and bodies of four more terrorists were recovered. The operation has been called off," he said.On Friday, an encounter broke out between security personnel and terrorists, after which the body of one terrorist, identified as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Umar Malik, was recovered, along with an AK-47.The bodies of four more terrorists were recovered here on Saturday, after which the operation was called off.

8 injured in clashes after bull damages standing crop

At least eight people were injured in clashes between two groups near here over a bull entering into a filed and damaging standing crops, police said today. The incident happened yesterday at Umerpur village under Thana Bhawan police station in Shamli district. SHO Krishan Kumar said the two groups used lathis and other sharp weapons against each other. He said the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The inured have been shifted to hospital.

4 terrorists killed in Shopian after fresh firing

Four terrorists were killed after fresh firing was reported in Shopian's Killora village on Saturday, taking the death toll to five.This came in continuum to an encounter that broke out between security personnel and terrorists at around 9: 30 p.m. on Friday.During the encounter, the body of one terrorist was recovered and was later identified as that of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, Umar Malik.An AK-47 was also retrieved along with Malik's body.Five bodies have been recovered in total, and the operation has ended.

Naxal gunned down in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur

A Naxal was killed and two others were injured in an exchange of firing with security personnel in Bijapur's Basugada village.Two security personnel were also injured in the incident.The incident took place when a group of 15-20 Naxals attacked the security personnel on Friday at around 11: 30 am in the weekly market organised in the area.As per Bijapur Superintendent of Police, Mohit Garg, they recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the possession of the Naxals.However, the injured Naxals managed to escape from the area.The jawans have been shifted to hospital for treatment.A search operation is underway to locate the other Naxals.

55 civilians killed in attacks Thursday on Yemen's Hodeida: Red Cross

A series of explosions on Yemen's rebel-held port city of Hodeida has killed 55 civilians and wounded dozens of others, the Red Cross said, denouncing the "reprehensible" disregard for human life. "While the exact circumstances around the ground explosions are still unknown, this lack of respect for civilian life and civilian property is reprehensible," said Johannes Bruwer, head of the delegation in Yemen for the International Committee of the Red Cross, in a statement today. Yesterday medics and witnesses said at least 20 people were killed in an air strike at the entrance to a hospital and the bombardment of a fish market in the Red Sea city of Hodeida.

Drug smuggler commits suicide during police encounter

Following a fierce gunfight with the police, an alleged drug smuggler today committed suicide in Bhimana, Rajasthan, police said. Khartaram of Barmer who was also an absconding murder accused died in the encounter, while Bhajan Lal Bishnoi of Jodhpur was arrested. The hunt for the third smuggler was on, they said. Acting on a tip-off that a huge consignment of poppy husk was being hauled in the area, a checkpoint was set up in Bhimana under the foothills of Arawali early morning, SP (Pali) Rahul Prakash said. An approaching car was signalled to stop but the driver sped past while another car following it opened fire at the police personnel, said Prakash. Miscreants loot Rs 3.6 lakh from bank branch in Muzaffarpur

Five armed miscreants today looted Rs 3.6 lakh from a Bank of India branch in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, police said. The miscreants, who arrived in three motorcycles, barged into the bank situated at Sakri-Saraiya Chowk under Kudhani police station area and looted Rs 3.6 lakh before decamping with the money, Senior Superintendent of Police Harpreet Kaur said. The miscreants also damaged the hard disks of computers and threw them outside before snatching the gun of the bank's security guard, Kaur said adding that the gun was later found lying at some distance from the bank. Kaur, who reached the spot, said that a Special Investigation Team headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police has been constituted to probe into the matter. No one has been arrested so far in this connection, she said.
