Rain leads to drop in temperatures in Himachal Pradesh

The mercury dropped by a few notches today as stormy weather conditions prevailed in several parts of Himachal Pradesh. The MeT department here warned of thunderstorm accompanied by squall and hailstorm in the mid and lower hills on May 7 and 8. It predicted rains or thundershowers in the mid and lower hills and rains and snow in the higher hills till May 10. The storm caused damage to standing wheat crop in the mid and higher hills and apple crops. Shimla received 9 mm rainfall, followed by 7 mm in Kufri, 6 mm in Fagu, 5 mm in Jhandutta, 4 mm in Kalpa, 3 mm in Kandaghat, 2 mm in Dalhousie, Jhanjehli, Solan and Narkanda. Minimum temperatures dropped by three to five degrees during past 24 hours and Keylong recorded a low of 3.7 degrees Celsius while Kalpa and Manali recorded the minimum temperatures at 4.6 degrees Celsius and 6.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. Scorching heat prevails in Raj, light rainfall in parts of state

Scorching heat threw normal life out of gear in parts of Rajasthan, with Kota recording maximum temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius even as rainfall occurred in isolated parts of the state. Jaipur registered maximum temperature of 42.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Bikaner, Barmer and Jaisalmer which recorded day temperatures of 41.8 degrees Celsius, 41.7 degrees Celsius and 41.3 degrees Celsius respectively. Maximum temperatures at other stations was below 41 degrees, the meteorological department said, adding light rainfall occurred at isolated parts in Kota and Ajmer divisions. The weatherman has forecast light rains and thunderstorm at isolated places in the state till tomorrow.

Heatwave conditions continue to prevail in Rajasthan

Heatwave conditions continued to prevail in parts of Rajasthan with Bikaner recording a high of 44.6 degrees Celsius. Bikaner was recorded as the hottest place in the state followed by Jaisalmer which recorded a maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees, according to the MeT department here. Churu, Kota, Jodhpur and Sriganganagar recorded a high of 43.6, 43.1, 42.9 and 42.7 degrees Celsius, respectively. Heatwave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Jodhpur division. Duststorm also occurred at isolated pockets in Kota, Udaipur, Ajmer and, Jodhpur divisions. According to the MeT department, the weather conditions would remain the same during the next 24 hours.

Fresh thunderstorm warning issued for several states

The Meteorological (Met) Department on Friday issued a fresh warning for possible thunderstorms in the northwest and northeast regions.The Met department's capability appeared rather limited as its alerts did not specify the intensity of storms."Thunderstorm activity is common in this weather. Certain meteorological conditions favour severity of the storms, right now conditions are favourable. Northwest and northeast regions and southern peninsular area expected to see thunderstorm activity, alerts issued," officials from Met department told ANI.According to media reports, the Met department had admitted that its radar wasn't working for a month and because of which it could not determine the precise intensity of the storm. Rain lashes Tirupati

Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gale lashed Tirupati and the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara near here late in the evening,today. Several areas in Tirupati plunged into darkness as the electricity department cut off the power supply as a precautionary measure, sources said. However, power supply was not affected on the Tirumala hills. The downpour brought respite to residents from the scorching heat. The temperature plummeted to 27 degree celsius in Tirupati and surrounding areas, which have been experiencing temperatures between 40-42 degree celsius since April 30.

Heavy rainfall lash HP, mercury dips

Widespread rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh bringing down the mercury by a few notches even as stormy conditions subsided. The local MeT office has predicted rain and thundershowers at few places in lower and mid hills and rain or snow in higher hills over the next six days from tomorrow. The lower hills of Himachal were lashed by moderate to heavy rains and Nadaun was wettest in the state with 70 mm rain whileGaggal and Palampur recorded 46 mm and 42 mm rain respectively, followed by Dalhousie 33 mm, Bijahi 31 mm, Jogindernagar 26 mm, Kasauli 23 mm, Dharampur 22 mm, Gohar andNaina Devi 20 mm, Dharamshala 19 mm, Manali and Nahan 18 mm. Una was the hottest during the day with a high of 37.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Sundernagar 29.8, Solan and Nahan 28.0, Dharamsala 26.4, Palampur 26.1 degree, Shimla 23.9, Bhuntar 21.6, Manali 17.0, Kalpa 12.0 and Keylong 10.9 degrees Celsius. Pleasant weather conditions prevail in Delhi

Pleasant weather conditions prevailed in the national capital as the mercury settled below normal a day after several parts of the city experienced rain. Traces of rainfall were witnessed in some parts of the city today as well. The maximum temperature settled at 35.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 19.5 degrees Celsius, five notches below the normal, a Met department official said. However, rainfall led to an increase in humidity in the air which oscillated between 100 and 41 per cent. The Met office has predicted overcast skies with the possibility of thunder and lightning for tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 38 and 24 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures here settled at 38.3 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.

Mercury drop in Pb, Haryana

People in Punjab and Haryana got respite from hot weather conditions with maximum temperatures dropping several notches below normal in most parts of both the states following rainfall yesterday. In Punjab, Amritsar's maximum temperature was recorded at 36.6 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala witnessed a high of 34.6 and 34.1 degrees Celsius, up to four notches below normal, the MeT Department said. In Haryana, Ambala and Bhiwani recorded maximum temperatures of 33.3 and 36.2 degrees Celsius respectively, up to four degrees below normal. Chandigarh recorded maximum of 33.7 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. Maximum temperature in Hisar, Karnal and Narnaul was 37, 34 and 33.2 degrees Celsius respectively, up to six degrees below normal. According to the MeT Department's forecast, light rains/ thundershowers may occur at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana in the next 24 hours.

A squall and dust storm followed by heavy rain lashed the national capital this evening offering respite to the Delhiites from the sweltering heat but caused traffic snarls in parts of the city. Fifteen flights, including two international, were diverted due to bad weather, airport officials said. A squall with a wind speed of 59 km per hour hit the city at 16.45 pm and continued till 16.47 pm, MeT Department said. Heavy storm led to fall of a tree on the road near Siri Fort Auditorium, resulting in traffic jam in the area. Some parts of the city such as Sansad Marg, Lajpat Nagar and Dwarka were lashed by the rainfall which started at 7.40 pm. Thunderstorm, rains lash Himachal Pradesh

Normal life was thrown out of gear as a squall and thunderstorm followed by intermittent rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh today. The adjoining tourist resort of Kufri and Nirmand and Ani areas of Kullu were lashed by a severe hailstorm causing extensive damage to apple and fruit crops. Kangra and Jwali recorded 46 mm and 44 mm of rainfall, followed by 33 mm in Kalatop, 32 mm in Dalhousie, 16 mm in Bangana and Dharamsala, 14 mm in Sundernagar, 10 mm in Kasauli, 9 mm in Sujanpur, 8 mm in Nehri and 6 mm in Shimla, according to a MeT department here. Heavt wave conditions prevail in parts of Rajasthan

Heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of Rajasthan despite light rain and dust storm, a Meteorological official said. Kota was recorded the hottest with 45.4 degrees Celsius followed by 45 degrees Celsius each in Bikaner and Jaisalmer, 44.2 degrees Celsius in Churu, 44 degrees Celsius in Barmer, 43 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, 42.7 degrees Celsius each in Ajmer and Jaipur, 42.1 degrees Celsius in Dabok, 39.5 degrees Celsius in Pilani and 37.5 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar. Pilani recorded 23.7 mm rainfall today, the official said. The MeT department has that warned of heat wave/duststorm likely to occur at isolated places in the state and forecast light rain/thunderstorm at isolated places in the state.
