Many areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while intermittent rains continued for the second day today in the plains of the valley, officials said. Fresh snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, an official of the MeT office said. He said the resort recorded about three inches of fresh snowfall till this morning. The official said there are reports of snowfall in other areas in the higher reaches of the valley like Kupwara, Zojila, Shopian, Gurez and several other areas. He said the plains in the valley received intermittent rains for the second day today. Kupwara, in north Kashmir, recorded the highest rainfall of 51 mm, while Srinagar the summer capital of the state recorded 4.2 mm of rainfall.

Rains lashed parts of Kashmir today with Kupwara in north of the Valley receiving the highest rainfall of 24.6 millimetres, forcing closure some of roads to remote areas in the district. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley in south, received 18 millimetres of rain since yesterday while Pahalgam gauged 11.8 millimetres of precipitation, an official of the MeT department said. He said Kokernag town received 12.2 mm rainfall while Gumarg in north Kashmir received 11.1 mm of rain. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, received 5 mm rainfall since last night. Roads from Kupwara town to remote areas like Tangdhar and Machil in the north Kashmir district have been closed as precautionary measure as these have been rendered slippery due to rains, an official said.

The average temperatures from March to May across North India are likely to be above normal by more than one degree Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its seasonal forecast. The MeT office, in a statement, said average temperatures in Delhi, along with neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, can soar over 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal levels. It projected maximum rise of more than 2.3 degrees higher than usual temperatures in hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The temperature rise is likely to be moderate in south India and four north-eastern states. India normally experiences hot weather and heat wave conditions during March to July period.
