Mild snowfall in HP's high-altitude areas

The higher reaches and high altitude tribal areas witnessed mild snowfall while light rains occurred at some places in the mid and lower hills, MeT officials said today Strong velocity winds lashed the region, causing marginal drop in day temperatures while the MeT office warned of thunderstorm accompanied by hail in the lower and mid hills tomorrow. It has also predicted thunderstorm and rains in lower and mid hills, and rains or snow in the mid and higher hills on March 4, 5, 8 and 9 and dry weather in the region on March 6 and 7. The higher reaches saw another spell of mild snowfall while mid and lower hills had light scattered rains. Dalhousie received 7 mm rains followed by , Manali and Moorang 3 mm, Kahu, Bhuntar and Bajaura 2 mm, Sunnibhajji, Solan and Sundernagar 1 mm. Fresh snowfall, rains in Kashmir

Many areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while intermittent rains continued for the second day today in the plains of the valley, officials said. Fresh snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, an official of the MeT office said. He said the resort recorded about three inches of fresh snowfall till this morning. The official said there are reports of snowfall in other areas in the higher reaches of the valley like Kupwara, Zojila, Shopian, Gurez and several other areas. He said the plains in the valley received intermittent rains for the second day today. Kupwara, in north Kashmir, recorded the highest rainfall of 51 mm, while Srinagar the summer capital of the state recorded 4.2 mm of rainfall.

Warm, sunny day in national capital

It was a warm day in the national capital with the maximum temperature settling at 32.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 15.5 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels oscillated between 85 per cent and 32 per cent, the Meteorological department said. The weatherman predicted clear sky tomorrow with some mist in the morning. "Mainly clear sky. Mist in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 32 degrees Celsius and 16 degrees Celsius respectively," a MeT department official said. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.1 degrees Celsius while the minimum settled at 14.9 degrees Celsius.

Rains in parts of Kashmir

Rains lashed parts of Kashmir today with Kupwara in north of the Valley receiving the highest rainfall of 24.6 millimetres, forcing closure some of roads to remote areas in the district. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley in south, received 18 millimetres of rain since yesterday while Pahalgam gauged 11.8 millimetres of precipitation, an official of the MeT department said. He said Kokernag town received 12.2 mm rainfall while Gumarg in north Kashmir received 11.1 mm of rain. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, received 5 mm rainfall since last night. Roads from Kupwara town to remote areas like Tangdhar and Machil in the north Kashmir district have been closed as precautionary measure as these have been rendered slippery due to rains, an official said.

Day temperatures drop, strong winds lash Himachal

Day temperatures dropped by few notches in most parts of Himachal as sky remained overcast and strong winds lashed the region. The MeT office had forecast rains or snow in the region today but the weather remained mainly dry with traces of rains at some places. The local MeT office has predicted rains and thundershowers in lower hills and rains or snow in mid and higher hills over the next three days from March 2 to March 4 and dry weather in the region on March 5 and 6. The minimum temperatures rose marginally and Keylong recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Kalpa, Manali, Solan, Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Dharamsala, Shimla, Palampur, Una and Nahan. However, mercury dropped by 4 degree at Una and touched 24.6 degrees Celsius while Sundernagar and Nahan recorded minimum temperatures at 23.8 degrees Celsius and 23.6 degrees Celsius respectively, followed by Bhuntar, Shimla, Dharamsala, Manali, Kalpa and Keylong. Geneva airport reopens after heavy snowfall

Operations at the Geneva's Cointrin Airport reopened after heavy snowfall had made its runways inaccessible on Thursday.According to airport authorities, flights started departing at around 11 am (local time) and arrivals were not expected until 1 pm (local time).In its official page, the Geneve Aeroport wrote on Twitter, "The runway is open at #GeneveAeroport for takeoffs. Delays and cancellations are expected. Average temp in North India to be above normal from March-May

The average temperatures from March to May across North India are likely to be above normal by more than one degree Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its seasonal forecast. The MeT office, in a statement, said average temperatures in Delhi, along with neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, can soar over 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal levels. It projected maximum rise of more than 2.3 degrees higher than usual temperatures in hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The temperature rise is likely to be moderate in south India and four north-eastern states. India normally experiences hot weather and heat wave conditions during March to July period.

Cloudy, warm morning in Delhi

Delhiites today woke up to a warm, cloudy morning with minimum temperature settling at 14.9 degrees Celsius. There was also shallow fog in the morning with visibility reduced to 700 metres at Safdarjung and Palam, a MeT official said. According to the MeT department, the humidity level recorded at 8:30 am was 90 per cent. The weatherman has predicted the day is to remain partly cloudy with maximum temperature hovering around 31 degrees Celsius, he said. The skies are likely to stay clear tomorrow on Holi, the official said.

Heavy winter weather batters UK, European mainland

Persistent snow and freezing conditions from a Siberian cold snap are causing delays in many parts of Britain and mainland Europe, with roads and train service hit particularly hard. People in Delhi experience warm day

It was a warm day in the national capital with the maximum temperature settling at 30 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 15.4 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal. Humidity levels oscillated between 85 and 38 per cent, an MeT department official said. The weatherman has forecast partly cloudy sky for tomorrow and mist in the morning. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius respectively," the MeT office said. Yesterday, the minimum temperature was 16 degrees Celsius and the maximum was registered at 28.1 degrees Celsius.

Weather remains dry in HP

The mercury rose marginally in most parts of Himachal Pradesh as weather remained dry and Una was the hottest in the region with a high of 27.2 degrees Celcius. Sundernagar and Bhuntar recorded a high of 26.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Nahan and Solan at 23.5 degrees Celsius. Shimla, Kalpa, Manali and Keylong recorded the maximum temperatures of 18.4, 15.6, 15.4 and 5.1 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures also rose by few notches and Keylong was the coldest with a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Kalpa, Manali, Bhuntar, Shimla and Sundernagar. The local MeT office has predicted rains or snow in mid and higher hills and rains and thundershowers in lower hills on March 1 and 2 as another fresh western disturbance would affect the Himalayan region from March 1 onwards.

Min temperatures hover above normal in Pb, Hry

Minimum temperatures continued to hover above normal limits across Punjab and Haryana with Gurdaspur recording a low of 9.1 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures across the two states, including their common capital Chandigarh, settled 2 to 4 notches above normal limits today, a Meteorological Department official said here. Chandigarh recorded a low of 13.3 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 10.5 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana's minimum temperature settled at 13.5 degrees Celsius. The respective minimum temperatures at Patiala, Pathankot, Adampur, Halwara, Bathinda and Gurdaspur settled at 13.7 degrees Celsius, 11.1 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees Celsius, 10.8 degrees Celsius, 10.9 degrees Celsius and 9.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum temperature of 14.7 degrees Celsius while Hisar and Karnal recorded respective lows of 12.2 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius. Rare snowfall blankets Rome, closing schools

Romans have awoken to a rare snowfall, after an Arctic storm passing over much of Europe dumped enough snow to force schools to close and public transport to reduce services. Rome's Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea usually result in mild winters, such that restaurants often keep outdoor seating open even through the coldest months of the year. As a result, the Monday morning snowfall, though not huge in quantity, brought excited young Romans out for a rare snowball fight or walk in the slush. Mayor Virginia Raggi signed an ordinance Sunday evening closing public schools as a precaution, and many private ones followed suit. Elsewhere in much of northern and central Italy, the storm also closed schools and disrupted transport.
