SCO meet: 'Colour revolutions' must stop, says Chinese President Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday asked SCO member states to guard against "colour revolutions" instigated by "external forces" and asked them to maintain strategic independence and safeguard regional stability, in a veiled attack on the US as it expands its influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Addressing the 22nd SCO summit here in the historic Uzbek city, Xi also announced plans to establish a centre in China to train counter-terrorism personnel by the grouping and mooted a development bank to speed up regional economic integration. Xi congratulated India for taking over the rotating Presidency of the Beijing-based eight-member regional grouping. Here I wish to express China's congratulations to India on assuming the next SCO presidency. We will, together with other member states, support India during its presidency, he said at the summit, also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The once-in-a-century pandemic has continued unabated. Regional conflicts keep flaring up

China's Xi visits Kazakhstan ahead of summit with Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday started his first trip abroad since the outbreak of the pandemic with a stop in Kazakhstan ahead of a summit with Russia's Vladimir Putin and other leaders of a Central Asian security group. Xi's trip underlines the importance Beijing places on ties with Russia and Central Asia as the ruling Communist Party promotes its strategic ambitions amid tension with Washington, Japan and India. Xi, wearing a blue suit and a face mask, was met on airport tarmac President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and an honour guard, all of whom wore masks. Tokayev's government said the two leaders would discuss energy markets and global economic turmoil. Kazakhstan, a sparsely populated country of 19.4 million people and sprawling grasslands, is a major oil and gas producer. China is a leading customer. On Thursday, Xi is due to fly to Samarkand in neighboring Uzbekistan for a summit of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization, led by China and Russia. Beijin

China's Xi Jinping keeps West guessing about economic pressure on Russia

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is keeping the West guessing about whether Beijing will cooperate with tougher sanctions on Russia as he meets President Vladimir Putin a year after declaring they had a no limits friendship ahead of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine. China has avoided violating sanctions but its purchases of Russian oil and gas rose almost 60 per cent in August over a year ago to USD 11.2 billion. That helps to top up Moscow's cash flow after the United States, Europe and Japan cut purchases and expelled Russia from the global banking system. Xi and Putin are due to meet this week in Uzbekistan at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, an eight-nation Central Asian security group. Washington and allies in the Group of Seven major economies want to squeeze Moscow by enforcing an upper limit on how much buyers are allowed to pay for its oil. That would require cooperation from China, India and other energy-hungry Asian economies that have avoided taking sides an

China's Communist Party Congress to confer more power to President Xi

China's ruling Communist Party is all set to amend its constitution at the next month's key once-in-a-five-year Congress to grant more powers to President Xi Jinping besides endorsing a record third term for him to lead the country for another five years or beyond. Xi's position is to be further elevated after the ruling Communist Party announced this week that it would amend its constitution at the upcoming national party Congress, according to analysts. The meeting of the 25-member Politburo, the principal policy making committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which met last Friday, said: "it was stressed at the meeting that the 20th CPC National Congress is a convention of great significance to be held at a crucial moment. "Under the firm leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, efforts should be made to unite the whole Party and all the Chinese people and lead them in building on past achievements," the meeting said, dropping clear hin
