Police went inside Jamia chasing rowdy elements: PRO Randhawa

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Public Relations Officer of Delhi Police, MS Randhawa reacted over the statement of Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Najma Akhtar who said that police entered university without permission. "When we started pushing rowdy elements, they went inside. Police also chased them, stones were being pelted at us. We are doing a detailed investigation," said PRO MS Randhawa while addressing a press conference in New Delhi.

AGP will move Supreme Court against CAA: Prafulla Mahanta

Payal Rohatgi sent to 8-day judicial custody over her controversial comment on Nehru

Bundi (Rajasthan), Dec 16 (ANI): Model and actor Payal Rohatgi, who was arrested by police over her comment on former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, has been sent to eight day judicial custody by local court in Rajasthan's Bundi on Dec 16. Few months ago, Payal made a controversial video against Nehru family. The complaint was filed by Youth Congress leader Charmesh Sharma and the case was registered under sections 66 and 67 of the IT Act.

Will file FIR against Delhi Police for entering Jamia campus: Vice Chancellor

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Jamia Millia Islamia University's Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar briefed media persons about the violent clash between students and Delhi Police, and said that they will file an FIR against the entry of police in the University campus. In the media briefing, she said, "We will file an FIR against the entry of police in our university campus. You can rebuild the property but you cannot compensate for the things the students went through. We demand a high level inquiry." She further said, "There has been a strong rumour that two students died, we deny this totally, none of our students died. About 200 people were injured of which many were our students."

Students of Lucknow's Nadwa College pelt stones during protest against CAA

Lucknow (UP), Dec 16 (ANI): Students of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama (Nadwa College) protested against Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow in solidarity with Jamia Millia Islamia on December 16. Students started pelting stones on security personnel during the protest. Police has closed the gate of the college from outside. While speaking to ANI, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Lucknow, Kalanidhi Naithani said, "There was stone pelting for about 30 seconds when around 150 people had come out to protest and raise slogans. Situation is normal now. Students are going back to their classrooms." Protests have erupted in several colleges against CAA in past few days.

BJP MLAs protest inside Maharashtra Assembly over Rahul Gandhi's Savarkar remark

Nagpur (Maharashtra), Dec 16 (ANI): BJP MLAs protested inside Maharashtra Assembly in Nagpur against Rahul Gandhi for his remark against VD Savarkar. They protested while assembly session was underway, and also highlighted a banner which said "India will not tolerate insult of patriot Savarkar ji". The former Congress chief at party's 'Bharat Bachao' rally on December 14 said he will not apologise for his "rape in India" remark since his name was not Rahul Savarkar and therefore will not apologise for speaking truth.

CAA protest: National Commission for Minorities appeals protestors to maintain peace

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 16 (ANI): Chairman of National Commission for Minorities, Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi appealed the protestors of Jamia and AMU to do it peacefully and on the other hand, he appealed the police to control the situation calmly. Rizvi said, "CAB is not against the Muslims of this country so they don't need to protest against it. And even, if they are protesting, they could do it in more peaceful manner." On protests in Jamia Millia Islamia and AMU, he said, "I appeal to the protesters that such protests should not be done. I also appeal to the police that they should show some restraint and control the situation calmly. I also appeal to the protesters that protest isn't needed as Citizenship Amendment Act isn't against Muslims of India. If at all they're protesting, it should be done peacefully. If Commission feels the need to issue notice, it'll be done."

Girl allegedly raped in school in Punjab's Beas, parents hold protest

Amritsar (Punjab), Dec 16 (ANI): A minor girl was allegedly raped by her schoolmate who is also a minor, in a private school in Punjab's Beas. Parents of the students staged protest outside the school. They demanded immediate action against school authority for not maintaining adequate security in the school premises. Police was also present at the spot.

Rumours of police burning buses absolute lie: DCP Biswal

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Claims of police burning buses during protest in Delhi have been doing rounds on social media, DCP of South-East Delhi, Chinmoy Biswal termed the rumours 'absolute lie'. "This (police burnt buses) is an absolute lie. When mob was setting fire to properties, police tried to douse the fire by asking for water from residents. As far as the particular bus is concerned, Police saved it by using water from a bottle," said DCP Biswal. Chinmoy Biswal further appealed the students of Jamia to maintain peace and discipline. He said, "I appeal to Jamia students, that the image of University gets affected when anti-social elements join their protests. Protests should be peaceful and disciplined."

Assam unrest: Situation is improving fast, says Lt Gen Anil Chauhan

Kolkata, Dec 16 (ANI): While addressing the media in Kolkata on December 16, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command in Indian Army, Lt General Anil Chauhan said, "In past three days, columns have been deployed in Assam and Tripura, some columns were kept on standby in Meghalaya also. Initially, till about day before yesterday, there were about 24 columns that were requisitioned in upper Assam and about 12 columns in lower Assam." "But physically on ground, the numbers were much lesser, that just indicates how fast the situation is improving and hopefully in a day or a two we should be back in barracks," he added.

TISS students march in solidarity with AMU, Jamia in Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 16 (ANI): Several students of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) marched in solidarity with Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia in Mumbai on December 16. They were protesting over alleged police brutality faced by protesting students. A large number of students participated in the protest and raised slogans. Police personnel have also been deployed to look after the law and order situation. Protests against CAA by students of AMU and Jamia turned violet on Dec 15.

Violent protests at Jamia being done on behest of Arvind Kejriwal: Manoj Tiwari

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari said the protests at Jamia Millia Islamia university are done on the behest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Tiwari also criticised one of the AAP MLAs who, Tiwari said, was provoking the students at the protest. Students of the central university were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act after which police personnel were deployed outside the university to maintain law and order. However, the protest turned violent after clash between students and police.

Maulana Azad University students protest against CAA in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Dec 16 (ANI): The students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Hyderabad on December 16. They were also protesting against the National Register of Citizens (NRC). A large number of students participated in the protest and raised slogans against the central government. Police personnel have been deployed to look after the law and order situation. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to Citizenship Amendment Bill on December 13 which will give Indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants who faced persecution in three neighbouring countries- Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Vijay Diwas: Service Chiefs pay floral tributes at National War Memorial

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): The three Service Chiefs, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief RKS Bhadauria and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh paid tributes at the National War Memorial in the national capital on December 16. They paid floral tributes on the occasion of Vijay Diwas. Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Naik, also paid tribute at the National War Memorial on this occasion. The nation celebrates Vijay Diwas to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in 1971 war. Rich tributes are being paid to the martyrs who laid down their lives during the war.

"What is happening in Kashmir must be an eye-opener for every citizen of this country. By passing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) they have plunged the whole country. There is a civil war like situation currently," he added.

Chandrababu Naidu leads TDP's 'walking backwards' protest against Andhra govt

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh), Dec 16 (ANI): Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu on December 16 led a unique 'walking backwards' protest in Amaravati against YSRCP government, alleging the ruling party of pushing development work in the state backwards. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been accused of reversing development work in the state. Naidu, who served as Chief Minister of the state until this year's assembly polls, failed in getting re-elected after the elections which were held simultaneously with the general elections.

BJP MLAs attend Maharashtra Assembly wearing 'I am Savarkar' caps

Nagpur (Maharashtra), Dec 16 (ANI): Various Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) arrived to attend Maharashtra Assembly's winter session in Nagpur on December 16. They were seen wearing 'I am Savarkar' caps as a mark of protest against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remark against Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Former chief minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis also arrived to attend the winter session. He was also seen wearing 'I am Savarkar' caps. The former Congress chief on December 14 had said his name is not 'Rahul Savarkar' and will not apologise for his 'rape in India' remark.

Nirmala Sitharaman holds pre-budget consultations

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Union Minister for Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, held pre-budget consultations with stakeholder groups from various fields including start-ups, fintech and digital on December 16.
