Sudarshan Pattnaik wins 'People's Choice Award' in US

Boston (US), July 28 (ANI): Sand artist, Sudarshan Pattnaik won 'People's Choice Award' at Boston International Sand Art Championship. Pattnaik, a Padma Shi awardee, hails from Odisha. He represented India at the 2019 Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival held from July 26-28. He made his sand art on plastic pollution with the message of 'Save Our Ocean', this year.

13,187 people died in Haldwani Govt Hospital, reveals RTI

Haldwani (Uttarakhand), Jul 28 (ANI): An RTI activist Hemant Gauniya has claimed that 13,187 people died in last 9 years in Dr Susheela Tiwari Government Hospital, Haldwani. The figures were revealed in an RTI filed by him. Principal of Hospital, Dr. Chandra Prakash said, "Our hospital is a tertiary care hospital, our hospital's mortality rate is high because terminally ill patients are referred here. That can be the reason for these numbers."

Woman dies after falling into borewell pit in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur

Sawai Madhopur (Rajasthan), July 28 (ANI): A woman died after falling into a borewell pit in Sawai Madhopur district on July 27. The incident occurred at Sirsali village of Bamanwas Assembly constituency at around 11 PM. The victim identified as 38-year-old Shanti Meena was working in a farm when she slipped and fell into the borewell. The body was retrieved from 40-feet and was sent to the primary health centre.

Senior Congress leader Jaipal Reddy passes away

Hyderabad, Jul 28 (ANI): Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy passed away on the intervening night of July 27-28. Reddy had been unwell for the last few days and had been undergoing treatment at a hospital here. On Saturday night he fell ill again and was shifted to AIG hospital where he was declared dead. He was 77.

Apple regularly hears Siri recordings to improve it: Report

New Delhi, July 28 (ANI): Apple contractors reportedly listen to the confidential conversations, the users have with Siri, as part of their job to improve the quality of the voice assistant. According to a report on Guardian, Apple says the data is used to help Siri and dictation better understands what the users say. The recordings include confidential medical information, drug deals, and recordings of couples having sex. Apple does not explicitly disclose this in its consumer-facing documentation, however, a small proportion of the recordings are passed on to the contractors around the world. The contractors are tasked with grading Siri on a number of factors such as accidental activation, appropriate responses, and so on.

Five hours of smartphone usage per day may increase obesity: Study

New Delhi, July 28 (ANI): In the 21st century everyone is hooked up with his smartphone, particularly young people, which lead to a decrease in physical activity, researchers have found. University students who used their smartphones five or more hours a day had a 43 per cent increased risk of obesity and were more likely to have other lifestyle habits that increase the risk of heart disease. Researchers have analysed 1060 students of the Health Sciences Faculty at the Simon Bolivar University from June to December 2018. The study group consisted of 700 women and 360 men. With an average age of 19 years and 20 years respectively. Participating men were 36.1 per cent likely to be overweight and 42.6 per cent likely to be obese. Women were 63.9 per cent likely to be overweight and 57.4 per cent likely to be obese. Watch: IAF's Mi-17 helicopter rescues stranded people in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 27 (ANI): Amid the heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17 helicopter rescued 9 people, stranded atop a building in Kalyan on Saturday. People were later dropped at Mumbai Airport. Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Saturday which has caused water logging in several parts of the city and suburbs. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in the city, which signifies that authorities should be alert and ready to prepare for a severe situation.

Watch: CRPF celebrates 81st Foundation Day at India Gate

New Delhi, Jul 27 (ANI): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which was established on 27 July 1939, celebrated its 81st foundation day at India Gate in the national capital Delhi. Celebrations included the March of CRPF Band, flag ceremony and cycle expedition by the Rapid Action Force (RAF). Motorbike stunts were also performed by soldiers. CRPF's Director General Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar and Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, along with other dignitaries, were present at the celebrations. CRPF is India's largest central armed police force which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Nation remembers 'Missile Man of India' on his 4th death anniversary

Rameswaram (TN), July 27 (ANI): Going down the memory lane, people from different walks of life fondly remembered former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, popularly known as the 'Missile Man of India', on his fourth death anniversary. Born on October 15, 1931, at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr Kalam specialised in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology. After having a successful career as an aerospace scientist, he went on to become the 11th President of India (2002-2007). He was fondly called 'People's President' by many for his friendly approach towards people. Dr Kalam was responsible for the development and operationalisation of AGNI and PRITHVI missiles and for building indigenous capability in critical technologies through networking of multiple institutions. Kalam passed away on July 27 while delivering a lecture at IIM, Shillong.

NDRF equipped to handle any disaster under PM's guidance: MoS Home Affairs

New Delhi, Jul 27 (ANI): After the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) successfully evacuated all the 900 stranded passengers from the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express which was stuck due to heavy flood in Badlapur, Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said the NDRF, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made such advancement in its resources that it works successfully in any part of the country. "Under guidance of PM, NDRF has made such advancement in its resources that it works successfully in any part of country when a situation arises. 900 people were saved today due to effective mgmt of Prime Minister and Home Minister," Rai told reporters at a press briefing in Delhi post the successful rescue operation.

CM Fadnavis bids for simultaneous assembly, local body polls in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jul 27 (ANI): Reasoning that the Maharashtra gets busy all year round for some elections or the other, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday pitched idea for simultaneous polls of Assembly and local bodies in the state. "In one year, around 250 days, there was a code of conduct in some or other parts of the state.
