Antibiotics may increase risk of colon cancer: Study

New Delhi, Aug 23 (ANI): Popping even a single course of antibiotics might increase, though slightly, the risk of developing colon cancer a new study suggests. The study was published in the journal 'Gut' highlighted the need for judicious use of this broad category of drugs, which are frequently improperly or overprescribed. "The primary message of this study is the importance of antibiotic stewardship: not treating common viral infections with antibiotics, using them for the shortest time period possible, and using targeted antibiotics rather than broad-spectrum ones," said study leader Cynthia L. Sears, Bloomberg Kimmel Professor of Cancer Immunotherapy at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The researchers found that those who developed colon cancer were slightly more likely to have been exposed to antibiotics (71.3 per cent compared to 69.1 per cent). 'Public toilet' becomes home, source of livelihood for 65-year-old women in Madurai

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Aug 23 (ANI): A 65-year-old lady has been living in a public toilet for past 19 years in Tamil Nadu's Madurai. Karuppayi has been living in a public toilet in Ramnad area of Madurai. She is earning her livelihood by cleaning the toilets and charging a meager amount from public for using it. While speaking to ANI, Karuppayi said, "I applied for senior citizen pension but didn't get it. I approached many officers in Collector's office but nothing materialised." "I don't have any other source of income. So, I live here in this public toilet. I earn Rs 70-80 per day. I have one daughter who never visits me," old lady added.

5,000 cylinders, 6,000 regulators recovered from rural LPG agency in UP's Balrampur

Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 23 (ANI): Around 5,000 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders and over 6,000 regulators were recovered from a rural LPG agency in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district on August 22. The incident took place in Pachperwa town of Balrampur district. Cylinders and regulators were hidden in bushes, godowns and other places of the gas agency. The gas agency naming Bhargav Indian Rural Distributor has been sealed in this regard by the concerned authority of Balrampur.

Roti, salt served to students for mid-day meal in UP's Mirzapur

Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 22 (ANI): Another incident has come in light narrating the lapse of administration in providing mid-day meal to the students. Students are aimed to be provided 'nutritious meal' through mid-day meal. On contrary, students of a primary school in UP's Mirzapur were seen eating 'roti' with salt in mid-day meal. The negligent teacher has been suspended. Mirzapur District Magistrate (DM) Anurag Patel said, "Negligence happened at teacher and supervisor's level. The teacher has been suspended. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh inspects relief operations in flood-affected areas

New Delhi, Aug 22 (ANI): Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court sent former union finance minister P Chidambaram to CBI custody till August 26 in INX Media Case. Supreme Court will hear P Chidambaram's petition against CBI on August 23. His petition against Enforcement Directorate (ED) will be heard in SC on August 27. Five sanitation workers died while cleaning a sewer in Ghaziabad
