35 dead, over 40 injured after gunman opens fire at nightclub

Istanbul, Turkey, Jan 01 (ANI): At least 35 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a nightclub on New Year's Eve in Turkey's Istanbul in what the provincial governor described as a terrorist attack. The assailant shot a police officer and a civilian as he entered the Reina nightclub before opening fire at random inside. Dozens of ambulances and police vehicles were dispatched to the club in Ortakoy. Turkey, part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State, faces multiple security threats including spillover from the war in neighbouring Syria.

London, Jan 01 (ANI): Speaking on the family feud in the Samajwadi Party, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh pleaded to be left alone in peace as he is being considered as the villain and the main reason behind the feud in the Yadav family. Beseeching everyone to let him live, he said that some people were putting posters, burning effigy and he would ask Party supremo Mulayam Singh to oust him from the party if the situation remains hostile like this. A frustrated Singh said implored Mulayam to save him from the attempts of making him a villain and causing feud in the Samajwadi Party.

Watch: New Zealand ushers in 2017 with fireworks display

Auckland (New Zealand), Dec 31 (ANI): New Zealanders celebrated the New Year with a fireworks display that erupted from Auckland's 328-meter tall Sky Tower on New Year eve. Thousands of residents and visitors lined the waterfront to watch brightly coloured fireworks and laser lighting erupting into the night sky over the city's harbor. 500 kilograms of fireworks were used in the display, which took five months of planning.

Royalists demand return of monarchy in Nepal

Anguished Madhesi Morcha demands amendment in Constitution before polls

Kathmandu, Dec 29 (ANI): The Madhesi Morcha, which supported the new government from outside, stressed on the amendment in the Constitution before going to polls. The meeting of the Morcha, which was held in Terai- Madhesh Loktantirk Party's office in Bijulibazar, made analysis over the present political scenario and agreed to continue the meeting. The three big parties, Nepali Congress, Maoist Center and opposition CPN-UML, agreed to announce the date for the local election within a week. The alliance also indicated that the country will head towards the civil war if the amendment is not made before election.

Pakistan releases 220 Indian fishermen

Karachi (Pakistan), Dec 25 (ANI): In a goodwill gesture, the Pakistan Government on Sunday released 220 Indian fishermen out of 518, who were arrested for allegedly entering and fishing in Islamabad's territorial waters. Giving details, Shunail Hussain Shah, Assistant Superintendent of Police Malir Jail, informed the step has been taken under the treaty between two nations and added that the other 219 fishermen will be released in second phase on January 5, 2017. The step comes amid the strain in ties between the two countries due to the recent cross border terror activities.

Nepal's political parties start preparations for local election

Kathmandu, Dec 22 (ANI): With the delay in announcement of date for holding the local election, the political parties in Nepal have started the preparations for the polls. Reportedly, Defence Minister of Nepal Balkrishna Khand as well as Central Committee Member of Nepali Congress informed about the preparations about the local election. The Nepal Government, last week, filed the bills needed to hold the local elections but is yet to announce the date. Though the government has geared up preparations for the election, the disgruntled parties are pressing for constitution amendment. But the political parties already have started the preparations. Nepali Congress also has sent its central committee members and the leaders to all the 75 districts as Central Committee Representative.
