Mohali, Oct 15 (ANI): The nephew of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Abhay Singh Sandhu, said on Thursday that the government will be approached for declassification of files of all freedom fighters who laid their lives for the sake of country's independence. Sandhu's remark comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met family of Subhash Chandra Bose and assured them of declassification of his files. Sandhu said that his family has raised some issues on martyr Bhagat Singh including the naming of the airport and added that the family is looking forward for a meeting with the government over the issue. He also urged that the government should not hide anything behind.
Mizoram, Oct 15 (ANI): A thrilling moment for these young boys from Mizoram! Government Chawngfiang Middle School from Mizoram won the Sub-Junior Under-14 title of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament in capital New Delhi by defeating Esteqalal School from Afghanistan. Both the sides gave each other a tough competition but the Mizoram team won the match 3-2 after scoring the decisive goal in the extra time. The winning team received a cash prize of Rs.2.5 lakh while the runners-up took home Rs. 1.25 lakh. The title of the best player was won by Chhunga Hmar from Mizoram, and he received Rs.40, 000 in cash and a laptop. Attari, Oct 15 (ANI): India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) seized 12 kilogram heroin at Attari town of Punjab bordering Pakistan. The seizures were made during a joint operation between the BSF and Punjab Police at an agricultural zone near Pakistan border. The consignment of drug was pushed to India from Pakistan through barbed fencing during the wee hours. The patrolling troops noticed some movement and challenged the smugglers at the border but they succeeded in escaping. So far no arrests have been made. Investigation was underway.
Jerusalem, Oct 15 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee, during his visit to Jerusalem in Israel, said that India condemns all forms of terrorism. Mukherjee who reached Jerusalem on Tuesday (October 13) after visiting Jordan and Palestine, was accorded a ceremonial reception at the presidential palace where he met his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin. Speaking at the occasion, Mukherjee called for "peaceful resolution of all disputers". Mukherjee lauded the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of agriculture, defence and technology and research while calling for further cooperation in other sectors with "significant potential". Mukherjee met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who said that sky was the limit for collaborations between the two countries and promised India any technology for its development. Birgunj, Oct 14 (ANI): Hundreds of people from Muslim community in Nepal extended their support to Madhesi community who are demanding amendments to the newly-adopted constitution. The Madhesi community in Nepal's lowlands, many of whom trace their origins to India, have imposed an economic blockade to oppose the promulgation of the new constitution. They are against splitting Nepal into seven provinces. Muslims gathered on the streets of border town Birgunj as they raised slogans and held flags against the Nepal government while demanding justice for the Madhesi community. They also offered prayers in support of the Madhesi agitation hoping that their demands are fulfilled. The medical and paramedical team also came on the streets to show their support against the new constitution framed by the previous Sushil Koirala government. India/ Kunming, Yunnan, Oct 14 (ANI): India and China began a joint counter-militancy exercise, code-named 'Hand-in-Hand 2015', for better coordination between the two armies while serving under aegis of the United Nations. The fifth joint exercise commenced at Kunming Military Academy in Yunnan Province in China. The twelve-day exercise lays emphasis on joint handling of counter militancy and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The opening ceremony commenced with an impressive parade by both contingents wherein national flags of both countries were brought on parade, followed by national anthems of both countries. An exhibition of weapon and equipment display were organised to familiarise with the weapon systems of each other. Tibet/Beijing, Oct 14 (ANI): China has completed the construction of the Zangmu hydropower facility in Tibet, the largest so far to be built in the region. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Tuesday that the two sides continue to communicate on the issue. The project on the Yarlung Zangbo River, the upstream section of the transboundary Brahmaputra, is located around 140 kilometres from the regional capital of Lhasa. India has expressed concern that upstream dams could disrupt downstream water supplies.
Abu Dis/Mount Herzl, Oct 14 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated India- Palestine Centre For Excellence at Al-Quds University, Abu Dis. He later paid homage to Theodor Herzl, founder of modern political Zionism, at his cemetery in Israel, apart from visiting memorials and educational facilities on the west side of Jerusalem. It is the first visit by an Indian head of state in three decades. Mukherjee's visit comes at a time when tension between Palestine and Israel has heightened over the last few weeks causing heavy casualties. Mukherjee's special plane landed in Tal Aviv, Israel, where he was received by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, M K Uri Ariel on Monday. As the Ramallah airport is not fit for operation Mukherjee was driven in a special cavalcade to Ramallah through Betunia border. Mukherjee headed back to Israel for a three-day visit. Kathmandu, Oct 12 (ANI): Nepal's new Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been sworn-in at Sheetal Niwas as President Ram Baran Yadav administered oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister. According to The Himalayan Times, Oli was elected as the 38th Prime Minister of the country. He secured 338 votes while Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala accumulated 249 votes during the prime ministerial voting held at the Parliament.
Amman, Oct 12 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee stressed on India's unwavering support to Palestine's demand for separate statehood and a negotiated solution to Israel-Palestinian conflict. Mukherjee was delivering a lecture at the University of Jordan in capital Amman after an Honorary Doctorate was conferred on him by the varsity. In July, India, for the first time, abstained from voting on a resolution on Palestine adopted at the UN Human Rights Council that called for accountability by parties involved in last year's conflict in Gaza. This had raised questions on the country's traditional Palestine policy. Mukherjee, who is to visit Palestine and Israel after his Jordan tour, said India's bilateral relations with both the countries were independent of each other. Amman, Oct 12 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee said the country will need USD 1 trillion as investment to lift those who are living below the poverty line. Mukherjee was speaking at delegation-level talks in Jordan's capital Amman, where he arrived on Saturday (October 10). Jordan Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour was also present on the occasion and the two leaders had discussed matters of mutual interest in their meeting before the talks began. The two countries also signed six agreements of cooperation on subjects including maritime transport, communication and technology, standards and metrology. Ten Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) for academic cooperation between Indian and Jordanian universities were also inked. A cooperation agreement between Jordan News Agency [Petra] and Press Trust of India [PTI] was also signed, added Wadhwa. Mukherjee and Ensour also discussed the situation in Syria, Palestine and the Islamic State (IS) menace.
Gaza, Oct 11 (ANI): An Israeli air strike on a Hamas target in the Gaza Strip on Sunday (October 11) brought down a nearby house killing a Palestinian woman and her daughter, hospital officials said, as a wave of violence in the region triggered fears of wider escalation. The Israeli military said in a statement its air force had targeted two weapons sites belonging to Hamas, the Islamist militant group which controls Gaza, in response to the launching of two rockets into Israel on Saturday (October 10) and Friday (October 9). Witnesses said the powerful explosion at one of the Hamas camps in Gaza City caused a nearby house to collapse while its inhabitants were sleeping inside. No group claimed responsibility for launching the rockets, one of which was intercepted near the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon. The other hit an open area, causing no casualties. The Israeli military said it held Hamas responsible for any attacks from Gaza.
Amman, Oct 11 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee thanked Jordan for evacuating Indians from conflict-hit areas during the Gulf crisis. Addressing a gathering of Indian community comprising businessmen and academicians in capital city of Amman, Mukherjee hailed King Abdullah II for his humanitarian services. He also lauded Jordan for providing relief and shelter to refugees from neighbouring Syria. The two leaders had held bilateral talks earlier in the day. Jordan, Oct 11 (ANI): In the first leg of his six-day tri-nation tour to West Asia, President Pranab Mukherjee held talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman on United Nations Security Council reforms and other bilateral issues. Mukherjee was welcomed by King Abdullah II at the al Husseinieh Palace in a colourful ceremony. He was also accorded a guard of honour and 21-gun salute in the forecourt of the presidential office. Male, Oct 11 (ANI): Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in the Maldives on a visit expected to revive ties after years of cooler relations during which China asserted its influence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled a trip to the Maldives earlier this year, after the arrest and contested trial of former president Mohamed Nasheed, the country's first democratically-elected leader. However, Swaraj's trip should lay the groundwork for Modi to visit the Indian Ocean nation. Swaraj was received by her Maldivian counterpart Dunya Maumoon at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport. Kathmandu, Oct 10 (ANI): The procedure of filing nominations for the highest ministerial post in Nepal gained momentum on the final day on Saturday before the country is set to face the elections for PM's post tomorrow. Sushil Koirala filed the nomination papers today in the country's capital Kathmandu. He has been fielded as the Nepal Congress candidate in the upcoming election. The decision was taken after a party meeting was held between the top three party leaders, including party president Sushil Koirala, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice-President Ram Chandra Paude, reports say. CPN-UML's candidate, KP Sharma Oli also went to file his nomination papers on Saturday. Oli and Koirala are contesting against each other, strongly competing for the PM post in the country. Turkey, Oct 10 (ANI): At least 20 people were killed in explosions on Saturday (October 10) outside the main train station in the Turkish capital Ankara where people were gathering for a peace march, according to reports. At least 15 bodies covered by flags, with bloodstains and body parts were scattered on the road, according to witnesses. There were reports that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber, but the source of those reports was unclear. Earlier media reports had said there were two explosions. The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear but a government official told it was being investigated.
Lahore, Oct 10 (ANI): Pakistani Sikhs celebrated 480th birth anniversary of Guru Ram Das, the fourth spiritual master of the Sikhs. Guru Ram Das also known as Jetha ji was born in 1534 at Chuna Mandi, Lahore which is presently in the central province of Punjab in Pakistan. Scores of devotees thronged the temple called Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Guru Ram Das Ji in Lahore to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Ram Das which is considered very auspicious by the Sikhs. The devotees observed religious rituals. Officials from Punjab religious affairs department also participated in the ceremony. Khalid Ali, chief guest at the ceremony and official at Auqaf and religious affairs department, said the work of Guru Ram Das will be remembered long.
