People in Nepal celebrate sibling festival with fervour

Kathmandu (Nepal), Aug 27 (ANI): Women across Nepal on Sunday celebrated the festival of Raksha Bandhan by tying "Rakhi" on the wrist of their brothers and praying for their longer life. Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrated on the last day of Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravan. 'Raksha' literally means protection while 'bandhan' means a bond. On this day, people in Nepal also celebrate Janai Purnima festival when they tie the sacred string on the wrist and change the string they wear around their body. This festival is regarded as the festival to strengthen the bond in between brothers and sisters. On their part, the brother pledges to protect his sisters' honour and gifts her as a token of the bonding.

EAM Swaraj invites Indian Diaspora in Vietnam to visit 'new India'

Vietnam, Aug 27 (ANI): Union Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on Monday invited Indian community living in Vietnam to India. "India has changed a lot, there is a drastic change in India, please visit to see a new India. India has opportunities now, take advantage of it," said Swaraj. The External Affairs Minister also highlighted 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' and urged younger Indian community to take advantage of the schemes.

Locals protest against govt over poor infrastructure in PoK's Tarar Khel

Tarar Khel (Pakistan occupied Kashmir), Aug 26 (ANI): Locals of Tarar Khel region of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) live in a poor condition owing to the infrastructure which remains in shambles. Roads, hospitals, educational institution, medical care among others have a very poor condition and no development has taken place. This is due to authorities who are ignorant toward the infrastructural condition. The locals demonstrated and shouting slogans against the government. The locals have earlier too carried out demonstrations highlighting the situation. One of the protestor said, "We are not doing this under the patronage of rulers. This is our tax money which is filling the coffers of the rulers. We have been trying to build a hospital for years. Prime Ministers, one after the other, have only made empty promises."

Senator John McCain passes away

New Delhi, Aug 26 (ANI): Former presidential candidate John McCain passed away at the age of 81. John McCain, who was also a republican senator died on August 25 (local time) after a prolonged illness. McCain's daughter Meghan McCain poured out her feelings through an emotional post on Twitter. She wrote, "I love you forever - my beloved father @SenJohnMcCain". McCain was diagnosed with primary glioblastoma, a type of brain tumour, in the previous year. This April, he underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis.

Watch: Miscreants attack Akali Dal leader Manjit Singh GK in California

California (US), Aug 26 (ANI): Akali Dal leader and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK was attacked outside a Gurdwara in California. His face was smeared with black ink during the attack. Three people have been arrested in connection with the attack. "I was attacked by more than 20 people. These people have not even kept the dignity of a Gurdwara. I told my aides to not say a word and maintain peace. We will not be cowed down by all this", said Manjit Singh after the attack. He was also attacked by alleged pro-khalistan supporter earlier this week in New York.

Nawaz Sharif granted permission to meet family in jail

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been granted special permission to meet his family members in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on Friday. Sharif's family had filed a plea to meet the jailed leader and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, in the prison. Subsequently, the prison authorities gave permission and apprised the jail superintendent of the same. The father-daughter duo is currently serving their prison sentences in the same jail after being convicted in the Avenfield reference case. Earlier on Wednesday, Sharif's brother and Pakistan Muslim-League (Nawaz) president Shehbaz Sharif and his family met the father-daughter duo in Adiala jail. On July 6, Sharif and Maryam were convicted in absentia in the Avenfield case by the Accountability Court. While the three-time Pakistan prime minister was given 10 years of imprisonment and slapped with a fine of eight million pounds, his daughter was awarded eight years in jail and fined two million pounds.

RJP-N says Nepal PM lying about Maleth incident

Kathmandu (Nepal), Aug 22 (ANI): The Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJP-N) claimed that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lied about not being present during the police firing that took place in Maleth in March last year. RJP-N General Secretary Keshav Jha praised Prime Minister Oli's address in provincial assembly of province 2 on Saturday, but claimed that it was marred by false statements. Jha further questioned the reliability of the state head and claimed that Oli's denial of being present at the time of firing had saddened the party.
