In one of the biggest seizures of gold in past one year, an Afghanistan national has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country the yellow metal valuing about Rs two crore at international airport here.

The accused was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival on Saturday from Dubai. "On personal and baggage search, eight gold bars total weighing 8 kg and valuing Rs 1.94 crore were recovered," a customs official said.

It is one of the biggest seizures affected in last one year, he said, adding, the gold was seized and the passenger arrested.

"The seizure is the result of intensified vigil at sensitive sectors which include Afghan region," he said.

Another Afghanistan national was arrested last month for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth about Rs 55 lakh at the airport.
