The war in West Asia may have adverse implications  for the Indian automotive industry and could pose near-term challenges for the sector, having an indirect impact on vehicle demand, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers President Shailesh Chandra  said on Tuesday.
While the automobile industry concluded the 2025-26 year from a position of strength, developments arising from the ongoing West Asian conflict pose certain risks, he told reporters here.
"Recent uncertainties arising from the West Asia conflict need to be closely monitored. The evolving geopolitical situation may have adverse implications for automotive production, input and commodity prices, fuel prices and freight rates, which could pose near-term challenges for the industry and may also indirectly impact the demand requirement," he said.

Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from companies to dealers rose 16 per cent year-on-year to 4,42,460 units in March this year, industry body SIAM said on Tuesday.
Passenger vehicle dispatches stood at 3,81,358 units in March 2025.
Two-wheeler sales rose 19.3 per cent to 19,76,128 units last month as against 16,56,939 units in March last year, SIAM said in a statement.
Three-wheeler dispatches to dealers were up 21.4 per cent last month at 76,273 units as against 62,813 units in the year-ago period, it added.

Automobile manufacturers will have to comply with stricter fuel efficiency norms from April 1 next year, as the government is unlikely to extend the deadline for the implementation of the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency III standards, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries Hanif Qureshi said on Monday.
He said that the need to extend the implementation deadline beyond April 1, 2027, may not arise, as the government has been in touch with the auto industry stakeholders on the CAFE III norms, and has sought their feedback regularly, keeping them well-informed. CAFE III norms proposed to be effective from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2032.
Differences persist among auto manufacturers on the rules, with small car makers arguing that leniency must be granted to them in the corporate average fuel efficiency (CAFE-III) norms on the basis of weight and affordability, even as large OEMs are opposed to differential treatment, saying it would compromise safety features.

Ujjivan Small Finance Bank on Monday said RBI has rejected its application to transition to a universal bank and advised it to reapply after demonstrating a diversified loan portfolio.
In a regulatory filing, Ujjivan SFB said the Reserve Bank has taken note of the bank's recent efforts towards diversification of its loan portfolio.
"However, they were of the view that there is scope for progress in this area. Therefore, RBI has returned the above-mentioned application and advised the bank to consider applying again after demonstrating a diversified loan portfolio," Ujjivan said.
In February 2025, Ujjivan SFB had announced submitting an application for universal banking licence to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Shares of Ujjivan closed at Rs 60.34 apiece on the BSE.
