Mizoram, Assam CMs agree to stop violence along disputed inter-state border

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday said that he and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma have agreed not to allow any more violence along the disputed inter-state border. Lalduhoma also said that Assam Border Area Development Minister Atul Bora will visit Mizoram next month. Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, the chief minister said that he recently met Sarma in Guwahati and both discussed the border issue. He said that the two neighbouring states agreed to maintain peace along the border and resolve the long-standing dispute. "We agreed that no more violence will be allowed along the border. We have been making efforts to resolve the dispute," Lalduhoma said. The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam had taken an ugly turn in July 2021 when police forces of the two states exchanged fire at the inter-state boundary, leading to the death of six policemen and a civilian from Assam. More than 1.59 lakh people have been declared as 'foreigners' in Assam so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. He said that another 96,000 have been marked as 'Doubtful' (D) voters. Sarma, who also holds the Home portfolio, said 100 Foreigners' Tribunals (FTs), which deal with the citizenship issue of D-voters in the state, are currently functional in the state. He was responding to a question by opposition AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam in the assembly. The chief minister said that 1,59,353 people have been declared as foreigners by these tribunals till December 31, 2023. The FTs have disposed of 3,37,186 cases till the end of last year and 96,149 cases are pending before various FTs, he added. In reply to another question from Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, Sarma said as per data, there are 96,987 D-voters in the state as of date. Assam govt presents Rs 2.9 trn Budget with deficit of Rs 774 cr, no new tax

The Assam government on Monday presented a Rs 2.9 lakh crore budget for the 2024-2025 financial year with a deficit of Rs 774.47 crore and proposed no new tax. Presenting the annual financial statement for the next fiscal, Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog also said the government will support the education of 10 lakh girls up to post graduation level in order to eliminate child marriage from society. "The Budget Estimates of 2024-25 show a receipt of Rs 1,43,605.56 crore under the Consolidated Fund of the state. After adding the receipt of Rs 1,44,550.08 crore under Public Account and Rs 2,000 crore under Contingency Fund, the aggregate Receipts amount to Rs 2,90,155.65 crore," she added. As against this, the total expenditure from the Consolidated Fund in 2024-25 is estimated atRs 1,43,890.62 crore, Neog said. Assam has become the first state in the country to deliver more than one crore Ayushman cards, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme provides health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year. "Assam achieves a new milestone. Assam has taken sustained efforts to realise Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji's goal of Universal Health Coverage," Sarma wrote on X. Mizoram, Assam agree to make efforts, resolve long-pending border dispute

Mizoram and Assam on Friday agreed to make joint efforts to resolve the long pending inter-state border dispute, an official statement said here. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma on Friday morning invited his Mizoram counterpart Lalduhoma, who is currently in Guwahati, over a meal and both leaders discussed the border issue. During the meeting, Lalduhoma and Sarma agreed to make collective efforts to resolve the border dispute between the two northeastern states, it said. Both leaders also agreed to maintain peace along the borders as long as the two neighbouring states hold border talks, it said. Ongoing construction activities across Assam have created large-scale employment opportunities in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. He also said that youths, in search of employment, were migrating to other states owing to lack of requisite skills, and taking up low-paying jobs there. State govt has over Rs 1.15 trillion outstanding liabilities: Assam FM

The total outstanding liabilities of the Assam government currently is over Rs 1.15 lakh crore, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog informed the state Assembly on Tuesday, while affirming that the debt to GSDP ratio of the state is within prescribed limits. She also maintained that the government has been repaying debts as per schedule while it has become self-reliant in paying for its salary, pension and loan interest from its own resources. Replying to a question by Independent legislator Akhil Gogoi, Neog said the total outstanding liabilities of the state as on March 31, 2023, is Rs 1,15,751.32 crore. The amount was Rs 82,741.09 crore as on the same day in 2021, she added.
