Annika 'Sorenslam'

DIVOTS

Business Standard New Delhi
World's No 1 woman golfer, Annika Sorenstam, will be attempting the "Sorenslam" in 2004. The 33-year-old Swede, six times LPGA Player of the Year, is the only golfer to shoot 59 on the LPGA Tour.

She has equalled or broken 60 records in the past three years and has gone over the $13-million mark in career earnings. So, the only goal left is to win four majors in a season.

She launched her quest with a four-stroke triumph in the Australian Ladies Masters "" a European Tour event "" on February 29.

The first Major for ladies this year is the Kraft Nabisco Championship in late March. The other Majors are the LPGA Championship, the Women's British Open and the US Open.

UNORTHODOX SWING

Craig Parry is hardly the kind of golfer you get to see on the big tours these days. He stands at five feet six and has a big belly and alligator arms.

And, he has bulging forearms, for which is often called "Popeye" by some. Johnny Miller, an analyst for NBC, said on the final day, even as Parry was on way to winning the Ford Championships, that his golf swing would make Ben Hogan (he died in 1997) "puke".

Parry won with a dramatic eagle on the first play-off hole. Parry's swing comes over the top and cuts across the ball, coming from outside in. Other pros lashed out at Miller for comments, which were seen as "personal".

Swing gurus say a swing is often dictated by a player's build. Parry's got a big chest and short arms and is a fairly rotund and short.

NOT COPYBOOK, BUT SUCCESSFUL

Parry need not bother about what a TV analyst said, for he has in his bank an additional $900,000 for winning the Ford championships.

Also, some of the others, who have in the past had purists shaking their heads with their swing include Jim Furyk, winner of the US Open last year.

Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer won with unorthodox swings. Doug Sanders had such a short back swing it was said he could hit a ball from inside a phone booth. Even Jack Nicklaus had a flying right elbow.
