BCCI may reject Essel Group's cricket proposal

| The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to reject the proposal of Essel Group to run a parallel cricket league in the country at its working committee meeting today, BCCI sources said. Essel Group, which runs Zee TV, had floated the concept of a parallel domestic competition - Indian Cricket League - and sought permission from BCCI in this regard. BCCI sources said the working committee, which is meeting today, is likely to take a decision on the matter after discussion on the proposal submitted by the Essel Group. Sources said apart from being a rival to the cricket establishment, the Essel Group proposal would run contrary to BCCI's constitution. Subhas Chandra, chairman, Essel Group, had launched ICL in New Delhi two days to create a reserve pool of talent in the country. In the first year, ICL will have six teams comprising of two national, four international and eight budding cricketers each and play in home and away basis. With $1 million as prize money for the tournament, Essel Group had said it would pump in Rs 100 crore for the whole set-up that includes building cricketing infrastructure across the country. |
