You are young, have just got a nice job and have selected the right set of wheels all by yourself.  Yes, the Wagon R is a great city runabout that can do the occasional long haul that you have in mind. It is extremely well built, reliable to a fault and economical too. Go for it! If you want choice, also test drive the Santro.  It is a well thought-out car that is extremely nice to live with in town too. Both cars return 13-14 kpl depending on traffic conditions.  B
