Ispat Ind sets up sinter plant

Company may save up to Rs 200 crore
Ispat Industries, the B K-P K Mittal controlled steel company, has commissioned a sinter plant with a capacity of 2.24 million tonne per annum.
The plant will help the company to reduce its cost of production by replacing high cost iron bearing raw materials.
Industry sources said the commissioning of the sinter plant would help the company to save up to Rs 200 crore a year. Ispat officials, however, declined to comment on financial impact.
A media statement released by the company said the setting up of the sinter plant followed the company's Rs 825-crore investment in various projects, including gas cleaning plant, ladle furnace, coal injection plant and infrastructure like jetty expansion.
With the commissioning of the sinter plant, Ispat's three-million tonne integrated steel complex at Dolvi in Maharashtra is likely to operate with lower operating cost by replacing lump ores and pellets by sinter.
The facility requires nearly 5.25 million tonne of iron bearing raw materials like pellets, lump ore, fines or scrap. The sinter plant has been built on Chinese technology by two Chinese companies - CFMCC and MECC.
| Ispat, which produced 2 million tonne of finished steel last year, also commissioned recently its new electric arc furnace taking its rated capacity from 2.4 million tonnes to over 3 million tonnes per annum.
