BDA to take up low-cost housing

Bs Reporter Chennai/ Bangalore
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) will construct two lakh low-cost houses over the next two years on land recovered by the state government from encroachers. The low-cost housing scheme will be launched next week by the government.

Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who chaired a meeting with housing minister D T Jayakumar here on Tuesday, told reporters that 300 acres of land recovered from encroachers around Bangalore would be handed over to the BDA shortly.

"The BDA will construct multi-storeyed housing complexes on these lands. A detailed project report will be prepared shortly. The BDA will mobilise resources on its own for the project," he added.

While 80 per cent of the low cost houses will be allotted to economically weaker sections, lower middle-class and middle-class families, identified by the BDA, the remaining 20 per cent of the houses will be given to poor families on rent.

"Those taking the houses on rent will have the option to own them after a period of two decades," he said.
