Jain food available in Chinese detention centre

Vinay Umarji Surat

Rubbishing reports of torture in the Chinese detention centre, Pratima Shah, mother of Parth Shah, one of the 12 Indian diamond traders released from China recently, said that Jain food was made available to those held there.

"Reports are doing rounds that they were tortured and offered non-veg food but those are untrue. Yes, they were kept a detention centre under house arrest. But the vegetarian, and especially Jain food was made available to Parth and other traders," said Shah who came back with her son late Thursday night from China after his release.

According to Pratima Shah, since it was a detention centre, the traders were deprived of house keeping facilities and had to tend to their own. "However, they were not made to do any other outside labour work and were under house arrest," she stated.

Moreover, belonging to the Jain community, the provision of Jain veg food came as a respite to the traders.
