Uttar Pradesh towns have topped in creating new job opportunities vis-à-vis peers in other states, which actually witnessed decline.
Four major towns of UP— Lucknow, Meerut, Kanpur and Allahabad —registered a 68-per-cent growth in employment generation during January-June 2012; whereas growth in job opportunities declined significantly in majority of the Tier-I, -II and -III towns.
Lucknow saw a surge of 54 per cent in job generation with 1,698 jobs between fourth quarter (Q4) of 2011-12 and first quarter (Q1) of the current financial year.
According to ‘Job Trends Across Cities and Sectors’, an analysis by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), education, banking, insurance, financial services, event management, real estate, IT, human resources, hospitality and FMCG were leading job generators in UP.
Meerut, Allahabad and Kanpur registered growth of over 133 per cent, 127 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.

“Although UP accounts for a paltry 1.3 per cent in the overall job generation in India, it has undoubtedly emerged as the state with all leading cities registering significant growth in job generation,” said D S Rawat, secretary general, Assocham, while releasing the findings.
The country had registered a dip of about 20 per cent in total job generation during the same period, which shows a slowdown in employment.
Assocham’s research bureau tracked the data on daily basis for vacancies posted by about 3,500 companies through job portals and advertisements in national/regional dailies and news journals for 56 cities and 32 sectors offering jobs.
Delhi/NCR generated over 29,000 jobs in Q1 of 2012-13, while over 1.2 lakh jobs were generated across the country.
Delhi/NCR with a share of about 23 per cent generated maximum jobs across sectors in the metros during the last two consecutive quarters.
There had been a dip of 14-33 per cent across 8 metros – Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai followed by Bangalore, Pune and Chennai were top five Tier-I centres that generated maximum jobs.
