Cashew promotion council has big plans

Sanjeev Ramachandran Thiruvananthapuram
Export of cashew kernels from India would touch 2,75,000 MT mark by 2020, if the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India's (CEPCI) efforts go as per schedule. At present, the export figure stands at 1,15,000 MT.

According to the Vision 2020 document released by the CEPCI at 'Kaju India' buyer-seller meet here, reaching this milestone would require an increase in raw nut production to 1.9 million MT with imports maintained at the level of 0.50 million MT.

The council has initiated efforts to increase India 's marketshare and to regain the dominant position in the global market and maintain leadership in all respects like production, processing, imports and exports of cashewnuts, the document said.

The Vision 2020 document further adds that CEPCI would launch programmes for technological upgradation and modernisation of the cashew industry for meeting export demands.

The packaging and presentation of cashew nuts also would be improved and the 'made in India' brand name would be used, it adds.

The council would explore new markets abroad and the number of countries to which cashews are exported is expected to go up to 125 from the current 60, the document adds.
