Markets turn choppy; Nifty slips below 8,900

The 30-share Sensex was down 37 points at 29,324 and the 50-share Nifty was down 5 points at 8,898.

Market have turned choppy oscillating between positive and negative territory as gains in infrastructure and bank shares helped offset losses in index heavyweight ITC.

At 11:45AM, the 30-share Sensex was down 37 points at 29,324 and the 50-share Nifty was down 5 points at 8,898.

The Indian rupee was trading unchanged at Rs 61.83 to the US dollar.

Infrastructure stocks such as L&T and BHEL were up 2-3% each on the back of focus on infrastructure growth in the Budget.

Axis Bank extended gains and was up 3.5% as the fungibility of FII and FDI in the Budget proposal would allow private sector lenders to raise additional foreign capital. Yes Bank and IndusInd Bank were up 1% each.
 

Bajaj Auto was down 3% after total February sales were lower at 22%. Total sales in February 2015 were down at 2,43,319 units compared with 3,13,394 units in February 2014, the company said in a release.

On the losing side, ITC is trading lower by 3% at Rs 350 on NSE, extending its previous day’s 8% fall, after the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed raising taxes on cigarettes.

In his budget proposals, Jaitley raised excise duty on cigarettes by 25% for cigarettes of length not exceeding 65 mm, and by 15% for cigarettes of other lengths.

Among other Sensex heavyweights, Reliance Industries and Infosys were down 0.6-0.8% each.

Among other shares, Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has rallied 7% to Rs 1,271, extending its Saturday’s 13% rally on BSE, after the government proposed the merger of Forward Markets Commission (FMC) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) which would bring all commodity exchanges under the SEBI Act.

Shares of state-owned oil marketing companies were up 3-5% after they hiked prices of transport fuels suchs as petrol and diesel by over Rs 3/litre which came into effect from Saturday midnight. Indian Oil Corporation was up over 5% at Rs 350, Bharat Petroleum was up 4% at Rs 776 and Hindustan Petroleum was up over 3% at Rs 640.

In the broader market, BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices were up 0.2% each.

Market breadth was neutral with 1181 gainers and 1186 losers on the BSE.

Markets have trimmed gains and are trading in a tight range on account of profit booking at higher levels.

Further, manufacturing activity expanded at its slowest pace in five months in February as a slowdown in new orders dragged overall output, a business survey showed on Monday.

The HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by Markit, fell for the second consecutive month, to 51.2 in February from 52.9 in January. A reading above 50 separates growth from contraction.

By 10:58, the Sensex is higher by 77 points at 29,439 and the Nifty has gained 33 points at 8,935.

The main gainers on the Sensex are Axis Bank, L&T, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki and BHEL.

However, shares of ITC has slipped over 3% , extending its previous day’s 8% fall, after the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed raising taxes on cigarettes.

Other notable losers are GAIL, Coal India, Tata Steel and M&M.

Benchmark indices continue to trade firm led by buying among capital goods and bank shares. However, selling in index heavyweight IT has capped the upside gains.

By 10:45, the Sensex is higher by 106 points at 29,468 and the Nifty has gained 39 points at 8,940.

Among broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices are up nearly 1% each. Market breadth in BSE is strong with 1,168 advances and 584 declines.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 614.03 crore on Saturday, as per provisional data. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 740.74 crore on Saturday, as per provisional data.

Trading in stock market would also be influenced by investment trend by overseas investors, movement of rupee against the dollar and oil price. Stock markets would remain close on Friday for Holi.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Asian stocks got off to a steady start on Monday as soft U.S. data was partially offset by a weekend interest rate cut by China, while the dollar hit a five-week high against the euro.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan inched up 0.1% and Tokyo's Nikkei rose 0.3%. South Korean and Australian shares also gained.

Activity in China's factory sector edged up to a seven-month high in February but export orders shrank and deflationary pressures persisted, a private business survey showed on Monday, underlying economic fragility that may need more policy support.

China's central bank cut interest rates on Saturday, just days before the annual meeting of the country's parliament, in the latest effort to support the world's second-largest economy as its momentum slows.

LEADERS & LAGGARDS

BSE Bankex and BSE Capital Goods index have surged by 2% each. However, BSE FMCG index has dipped by over 1%.

The top gainers on the Sensex are Axis Bank, L&T, HDFC Bank, BHEL, HDFC and Maruti Suzuki, all surging between 2-3%.

Axis Bank has edged higher after the Budget proposal would favour select private sector lenders who will now be able to raise additional money from foreign institutional investors.

The Budget has given a push to infrastructure and the huge expenditure planned is a welcome move for the sector. L&T and BHEL have gained between 2-3%.

Shares of airline companies were trading 4-5% lower in early trades after oil marketing companies raised price of aviation turbine fuel by 8.2%, the first such hike since last July. Jet Airways and SpiceJet are down over 4%.

Shares of PSU OMCs are trading higher after the companies announced increase in petrol and diesel prices with effect from midnight of 28 February 2015/1 March 2015. IOC, BPCL, HPCL have gained over 1%.
