A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in southwest China killed 367 people and left 1,300 injured on Sunday, said reports.

The earthquake was the strongest to hit the area in the last 14 years, said the State broadcaster CCTV.

According to the US Geological survey, the earthquake hit the Yunnan province at 08:30 GMT.

Tremors were felt in the neighbouring Guizhou and Sichuan provinces as well, reports the BBC.

Reports also said that a major relief and rescue operation was under process.

The government is sending 2,000 tents, 3,000 quilts and 3,000 folding beds to the disaster-hit areas.

There were many destroyed houses and communication was also reportedly affected.
