British Prime Minister David Cameron and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday unveiled Mahatma Gandhi's nine-foot long bronze statue at London's Parliament Square.

Cameron said the statue of Gandhi celebrates the coming together of the world's oldest democracy with the world's largest one, and added that it celebrates the universal power of Mahatma's message.

"This statue celebrates the universal power of Gandhi's message. This statue celebrates the coming together of the world's oldest democracy with the world's largest one," said Cameron.

"Gandhi said, we must not lose faith in humanity, humanity is like an ocean. If a few drops of ocean are dirty, it doesn't make the entire ocean dirty," he added.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, who was also present at the unveiling of the statue, read out an excerpt from Mahatma Gandhi's "The World Of Tomorrow" at the event.

"I answer not only our belief, but conviction, there must be a society based on non-violence," Bachchan said at the event.

Mahatma Gandhi is the first Indian to be honoured with a statue at London's Parliament Square.
