New Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has said that Manchester City can reach the last 16 in the Champions League this season if they manage to break their 'group stage hoodoo'.

Guardiola was widely tipped to replace Roberto Mancini when it became apparent the job of City manager would become available in the summer.

According to the Mirror, ahead of his side's Champions League clash with City at the Etihad on Wednesday, the Spaniard said that after two years of painful falls at the first hurdle in Europe's premier competition, City could reach February's knockout rounds.

Backing City to qualify for the next stage for the first time, Guardiola also said that City could be one of the toughest teams in the next round in the European championship given that it is one of the biggest teams in Europe and have made big steps forward.
