Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, recently attended the foundation day of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Tibet Charity, here.

A government of exiled Tibetans and tens of thousands of refugees are based in India.

The NGO, in its 10th year, has been contributing immensely in the fields of education, social development and animal care.

Hundreds of Tibetans and supporters gathered at Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) near Dharamsala to celebrate the event wherein leaders and activists delivered speeches and various artists performed cultural activities.

Sangay hailed the efforts of those involved with the charitable organisation.

"Despite all the challenges, you all have sustained for 10 years, this is a remarkable achievement. In Buddhism we all are advised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to have a kind heart but to have a kind heart and to do kind things is quite different," he said.

Meanwhile, the director of Tibet Charity, Tsering Dhondup, added that the organisation has been offering its services to the poor for the last 10 years.

Thousands of people, including spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, had fled into exile in India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule and since then have been living in various refugee colonies, settlements across India.

The Dalai Lama devolved his political leadership to Sangay, an elected official, three years ago.

Dharamsala has been the global headquarters of Tibetan exiles since 1959. Many settled there after walking for weeks across the Tibetan plateau, bringing with them tales of torture.
