United States Secretary of State John Kerry and visiting British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond have although said that they would consider supporting a buffer zone inside Syria to protect Turkey's borders but have stopped short of accepting Turkey's proposal right now, a report said.

While both Kerry and Hammond said that the concept of a buffer zone needs to be examined carefully to see how it works, they also refused to rule out the possibility at this stage, reported News 24.

Turkey has long called for a buffer zone inside Syria as well as a no-fly zone to secure its borders and put a stop to the flow of refugees from across the border.

Kerry assured that the issue would be raised at a meeting between U.S. officials and Turkish authorities later this week.
