Defending champion Stan Wawrinka kicked off his French Open tournament on a winning note as he survived a huge opening-round scare against Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic to progress through to the next round in Paris on Monday.

The third-seed, who twice fell a set, dug himself out of trouble to record a 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over his Czech compatriot in a neck-to-neck contest that lasted for over three hours at Roland Garros.

With the win, Wawrinka has now booked a second-round clash against Japan's Taro Daniel, who struggled past Slovakia's Martin Klizan 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-0 in the first round of the second major of the season.
