Yemen President resigns from post after rebels fail to abide by newly-struck peace deal

A day after Yemen's president struck a peace deal with Shia Houthi rebels, he has reportedly stepped down from the post along with his prime minister in order to protest against the takeover of the capital Sanaa by the rebels.

President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi decided to resign after the Houthis failed to meet the terms of the recently-forged peace deal, reported the BBC.

The resignation has created a "dangerous" political vacuum, the report said.

The Yemeni parliament has however, refused accept the resignations.

The President's resignation has been welcomed by Houthi rebel figures publicly with one proposing to form a ruling council.

Abu al-Malek Yousef al-Fishi said that the council would comprise Houthi-led groups.

 

Houthi rebels had earlier agreed to withdraw from key positions in the capital city and from around the presidential palace and the home of Hadi as part of the new peace deal.
